What Does It Take to Become a Gastroenterologist?

Gastroenterology is a demanding medical specialty with most physicians working on rotating on-call shifts. Gastroenterologists study, diagnose and treat disorders of the esophagus, stomach, bowels, liver, pancreas and gallbladder. Some of the most common complications treated by gastroenterologists include ulcers, certain cancers, jaundice and abdominal pain. Gastroenterologists perform a variety of procedure-intense treatments including biopsies, endoscopies, colonoscopies, ERCPs, and EUSs.To qualify for gastroenterology jobs, candidates begin their journey with a pre-med undergraduate degree followed by four years of medical school and a 2-3 year residency program in internal medicine. Hopeful Gastroenterologists must also complete a fellowship for up to three years and be certified by the American board of Internal Medicine.
