General Description (Purpose and Function):
- The Physician is responsible for assessing physical and psychosocial status of patients by means of interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies.
- The Physician educates patients on wellness, prevention and early detection by providing materials and resources to the patients and families.
- The physician is also responsible for driving the academic and operational missions of the division. This includes education, research, and patient care within our inpatient and/or outpatient care settings.
- The physician is expected to work collegially and collaboratively with other members of the Division of Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine (PCCSM), Department of Medicine (DOM) and other Departments or Centers, School of Medicine (SOM), University of Miami Medical Group (UMMG), and affiliated Hospital entities in promoting the various missions.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Direct the care of critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit
- Monitor and maintain pulmonary support for patients, including use and calibration of ventilators and life support systems
- Formulate treatment plans, routine diagnostic and follow-up studies, and therapeutic measures
- Develop post-discharge care in accordance with written practice protocols
- Order appropriate laboratory tests according to practice guidelines
- Provide supervision of medical services and ensure appropriateness, quality, and safety of patient care within the scope of the division.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate an appropriate patient plan of care
- Assess severity of patient's condition, determining and directing patients to appropriate medical plan and assessment
- Actively participate in quality assurance programs and peer review activities
- Determine required referrals based on level of urgency, and patient needs
- Exercises final medial judgment in all issues of healthcare
- Reviews on a regular basis long term cases that require ongoing medical attention
- Consults with Medical Director and other professional on staff as needed regarding patient care programs established by the hospital or clinic
- Oversee assigned allied health professional medical staff and nursing clinical
- Assist in the resolution of complaints, request and inquiries from patients
- Develop priorities for growth of clinical programs to meet patient needs
- Enhance quality of care and implement innovations in care
- Supplement departmental and research efforts
- Maintain confidentiality of all patient information according to federal and state guidelines and regulations
- Document all services in patient medical records for compliance and regulatory adherence
- Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques
- Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatments
- Effective verbal and written communication skills along with proper telephone etiquette
- Performs in tactful and professional manner.
Education Requirements (Essential Requirements):
- Physician with MD or DO Degree
- Board Certified with Medical License
- Board Eligible with Medical License
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS)
