The Department of Radiation Oncology and Applied Sciences (DROAS) at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center seeks applications for a full-time radiation oncologist, with emphasis on gynecologic oncology and brachytherapy, to serve in Lebanon, New Hampshire. DROAS is a member of the Dartmouth Cancer Center (DCC), one of the original NCI-designated cancer centers, and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College. Boasting ACR accreditation, DROAS is a long-standing member of NRG/RTOG (Lead Academic Participating Site) and participant of Alliance & ECOG-ACRIN (full members). The current faculty includes multiple physician-scientists with wet & dry labs. Staffing includes 11 physicians, 7 physicists, 9 dosimetrists, 8 nurses, 27 RTTs, & shared secretarial and administrative support. DROAS has a fully ACGME-accredited medical residency program and a CAMPEP-accredited medical physics residency program. Candidates must be BE/BC in Radiation Oncology and have a strong commitment to academic cancer care. The Radiation Oncologist's duties include confirming diagnoses, determining the appropriate treatments, and conducting radiation therapy. The provider will work closely with our experienced radiation oncology team which, includes ABR certified radiation oncologists and physicists. The successful candidate must have adequate clinical and interpersonal skills as part of a collegial, collaborative, and multi-disciplinary team. This position includes opportunities for research collaboration with faculty at the DCC, Dartmouth College, Geisel School of Medicine, Thayer School of Engineering graduate program in medical physics, and The Dartmouth Institute. Physician scientists are welcome to apply and would be eligible for protected research time.  The Physician is responsible for supervising and providing necessary and desirable medical care within the Physician’s specialty to Dartmouth-Hitchcock patients, consistent with the policies and procedures of DHC, the facility at which care is rendered, and the directions of the Service Line Leader or his/her designee. If the Physician’s specialty is such that call coverage is required, it is expected that the Physician will rotate call coverage with those physicians and allied health professionals in his or her specialty (as applicable) so that each provider, including the Physician, has a comparable amount of on call time during nights, weekends, and holidays for providing coverage outside of standard business hours. Parties expect that while on call, physician shall remain in close proximity as directed by department chair or designee. In addition to the Physician’s clinical responsibilities, the Physician will spend sufficient and reasonable time on administrative and record-keeping matters pertaining to the Physician’s medical practice.

Responsibilities

The candidate will serve as radiation oncologist, with gynecologic oncology as the primary site of care and special emphasis on HDR brachytherapy preferred. State-of- the-art technology including MRI Linear accelerator (MRIdian), Varian HDR and VisionRT, is part of the armamentarium of treatment delivery available through DROAS. Career development for the successful candidate is a high priority of our leadership. Radiation Oncologist Core Responsibilities and Requirements:
  • Conducting tests and examinations to confirm diagnoses.
  • Executing radiation treatments such as external beam radiotherapy including intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), and stereotactic treatments.
  • Developing treatment plans that comprise the appropriate therapeutic techniques and drug dosages to be administered.
  • Consistently monitoring patients' progress.
  • Providing pharmacological treatment and suggesting appropriate lifestyle changes.
  • Prior experience treating and diagnosing cancer patients.
  • Adequate knowledge of radiation therapy procedures and techniques.
  • Effective verbal and written communication abilities.
  • A compassionate and empathetic personality.
  • Ability to practice on a per diem “as-needed basis” across several locations in New Hampshire and/or Vermont.
Dartmouth Health standard requirements include:
  1. Provide clinical and related administrative services and actively participate in and contribute to DHC’s academic endeavors.
  2. Abide by the Dartmouth Health Bylaws for the Professional Staff and Code of Conduct.
  3. Review records and detailed medical history from patient(s).
  4. Determine appropriate diagnosis (diagnoses) and treatment plan(s).
  5. Determine and order appropriate screening and diagnostic tests and studies.
  6. Obtain informed consent for treatment diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and studies.
  7. Interpret and evaluate test and study results.
  8. Prescribe medications, treatments, and medical devices in accordance within specialty scope of practice and applicable rules and regulations.
  9. Initiate referrals to other providers as necessary.
  10. Initiate admission/discharge of patients, if applicable.
  11. Provide consultation, education, and counseling regarding the management of acute and chronic illnesses and injuries. Encourage behavioral change and assist with self-management skills to improve overall health, within specialty scope of practice.
  12. Complete appropriate documentation in a timely manner.
  13. Provide patient and family-centered care.
  14. Insure the patient’s right to privacy, confidentiality and informed consent.
  15. Supervise APP’s as directed.
  16. Participate in continuing medical education (CME).
  17. Participate in quality and patient safety initiatives.
  18. Participate in academic responsibilities assigned by the Department Chair or designee, to include, but are not limited to:
  19. Leading small group resident conferences
  20. Training of Residents
  21. Teaching medical and other health professional students
  22. Participating in clinical trials or other sponsored research
  23. Any other Geisel obligations (if any)
  24. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Advanced clinical degree (MD or DO)
  • Post graduate training in residency program

Required Licensure/Certifications

  • Current New Hampshire Medical License
  • Current or eligible for ABMS Board Certification (to be obtained within 5 years)
  • Active hospital staff membership
