Radiation Oncologist (M67700)

VCU Health, Richmond, VA

Mission or Goal of Unit:

At MCV Physicians, our mission is to set the standard for quality in patient care and to support the physician members and the mission of the VCU School of Medicine.  MCV Physicians aims to be the provider of choice for quality health care that is patient-centered, physician-driven, accessible, efficient, and evidence-based and that reflects the values of an outstanding integrated academic practice.

The goal of the Department of Radiation Oncology is to provide the highest possible quality of patient care, while advancing knowledge through cutting-edge research and training the next generation of practitioners in the field.

Chief Purpose of This Position:

The Department of Radiation Oncology at Virginia Commonwealth University is looking to hire a board-eligible or board-certified full-time clinical faculty Radiation Oncologist with an interest in multi-specialty Oncology with specific interest and experience in adolescent and pediatric services.  The individual hired into this position will serve as one of our primary clinical Radiation Oncologists for our downtown Richmond, VA facilities, primarily servicing our inpatient population by providing consultative and external beam radiotherapy treatment services and being responsible for quality of care within this population.  Additionally, this position will serve as a key lead in the continued development of adolescent and pediatric services, including a survivorship clinic.

Position Responsibilities:

As one of our primary radiation oncologists providing consultative and external beam radiotherapy treatment services at our downtown facilities, responsibilities will include:

  • Teaching: Time and effort [~5%] shall be devoted to teaching and teaching-related activities.  (This will primarily include medical students, dental students, graduate students, allied health students, residents, fellows, and colleagues where appropriate. Teaching responsibilities also shall be considered to include preparation of instructional materials, evaluative materials, testing and maintenance of personal professional skills through continuing education, advising and mentoring trainees, and participation in academic reinforcement programs.)
  • Research: Time and effort [~5%] shall be devoted to research-related activities.  The primary responsibility of the candidate will be active participation in clinical research, including clinical trial design and enrollment of patients in clinical trials.  Active participation in national cooperative research organizations to further the mission of the Massey Cancer Center is strongly encouraged.  Collaborative activities with laboratory scientists, both inside and outside the institution, leading to translational research projects are also encouraged.  Obtaining extramural support for clinical research through industry or other funding agencies is strongly encouraged.
  • Service: Time and effort [80%] shall be devoted to the provision of clinical services.  The individual hired into this position is expected to maintain a broad general radiation oncology practice and proficiency in external beam radiotherapy techniques.  The necessity to take primary responsibility for specific types of cases may arise through rotations on the inpatient consultation service or coverage during the absence of other members of the department.  There is an expectation to integrate students and residents into this service on an intermittent basis.  Active participation in the multidisciplinary tumor boards is also expected, as appropriate.  The incoming candidate will be provided the necessary space (clinical and office), clerical, and nursing support to carry out all duties.
  • Other: (administrative duties, etc.) Time and effort [10%] shall be devoted to academic service-related activities.  This shall include college, school, and departmental committee work, professional growth, and other such assignments.  The department’s upcoming goals include development of an AYA (adolescent young adult) survivorship program.  Development and maintenance of this program will be a priority for the individual hired into this position.

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate holds a MD or DO degree or equivalent and is either board-certified or board-eligible in Radiation Oncology or its equivalent; brings a dedication to clinical practice and to collegial multidisciplinary care in a community setting; and has demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment, or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.  The primary clinical function of this position will be servicing the inpatient population.  The incoming candidate would require experience and commitment to a majority of clinical dedication to this space as we seek coverage for no less than 3 days a week.

Preferred Qualifications:

Interest in clinical research is also desirable, as our focus to be leaders in cancer innovation is at the forefront of our mission for all Radiation Oncology Department providers.

Established in 1987, VCU’s Department of Radiation Oncology provides a full range of clinical services at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center and its regional affiliated facilities.  Our department is comprised of over 30 faculty within our three divisions, spanning five clinical locations and treating approximately 150 patients per day, with active, funded programs in clinical research, medical physics, and molecular radiobiology and targeted imaging.  Our team is an integral component of VCU’s Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of only two National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in Virginia.  Affiliated centers are electronically linked to the main Department for the purposes of both education and QA.

Our Radiation Oncology team is highly unified and collaborative, reflecting the discipline at large.  Our faculty are committed to providing exceptional and compassionate patient-focused care, conducting cutting-edge research, and educating emerging attending providers, medical physicists, and dosimetrists to contribute to the ever-evolving field of Radiation Oncology.  We remain connected outside of the clinic too, as we aim to gather everyone together at least once a year, and we have an active group of runners and walkers who participate in the annual Monument Avenue 10K/Massey Cancer Center fundraiser as “The Beam Team”!

The Department supports a sizeable educational program, including a Radiation Oncology residency, Medical Physics residency, Medical Physics graduate program, and post-doctoral research programs in Physics and Biology.  Our research programs are supported by multiple NCI grants as well as other extramural sources, and our team members are involved in a wide range of complementary clinical trials, both investigator-initiated and as cooperative groups.

Our full range of clinical services currently include: IMRT, image-guided brachytherapy, cone-beam CT-guided radiotherapy, on-line portal imaging, and stereotactic radiosurgery.  Technologies available in our downtown facilities include: MR linac (ViewRay), PET CT simulator, and MR simulator.
