The Departments of Laboratory Medicine (DLM) and Pathology at Boston Children’s Hospital (a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School) are seeking a Hemopathologist with the appropriate training, experience, and established skill set to join the faculty as a Co-Director or Associate Director of the Hematology Laboratory in DLM and member of the Hemopathology faculty in Pathology. The candidate will serve as the Medical Director of the flow cytometry laboratory and will determine the future direction of the laboratory in collaboration with the Director of Hematopathology, flow cytometry senior scientist, and an immunology consultant. The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of experience leading a Hematology Laboratory/Hemopathology Service at the Assistant Director, Associate Director, or Director level. This is a joint appointment between the two departments to provide clinical service in laboratory hematology, flow cytometry (DLM) and hemopathology (Pathology). Clinical laboratory expertise in hematology, coagulation and flow cytometry is essential.
A MD, or MD/PhD degree is required. American Board of Pathology certification in Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology (or both) as well as subspecialty certification in Hemopathology are necessary.
Applicants should be committed to excellent patient care, as well as research, scholarship, and teaching. The clinical responsibilities will be primarily in Hematology, Coagulation, Flow Cytometry and Hemopathology. This full-time position offers the candidate the opportunity and support to establish a research program focused on clinical or translational research. The environment provides substantial opportunity for research collaborations with investigators at Boston Children’s Hospital, at other Harvard-affiliated institutions, and at other institutions throughout the Boston area. Candidates for this position must meet criteria for appointment as an Instructor, Assistant Professor, or Associate Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School; the successful candidate will have a track record of scholarship, teaching, clinical leadership and/or mentorship and the potential for continued development in these areas. Appointment as Co-Director or Associate Director, academic rank, and salary will be commensurate with experience and accomplishments, and salary will be competitive.
The clinical laboratories and transfusion medicine service within the DLM are currently staffed by 8 faculty at the Director/Associate Director level. The clinical laboratory moved to its current new location in 2023. The Hematology-Coagulation laboratory provides state-of-the-art testing in routine and special Hematology and Coagulation, within a total automation system for routine testing which is the first in the nation in Pediatric Laboratory Medicine. The Flow cytometry laboratory provides diagnostic and research services for hematological malignancies and immunology.
The Hematopathology service within the Department of Pathology currently consists of three hematopathologists and three molecular pathologists. The Hematopathology Service provides expert diagnosis and classification of pediatric hematopoietic disorders including leukemia, lymphoma, bone marrow failure, and immune dysregulation. The service is responsible for approximately 800 bone marrow specimens, 1100 leukemia and lymphoma flow cytometry specimens, 150 lymph node specimens, 100 surgical specimens from other sites, and 200 consultation cases annually. State of the art molecular diagnostics are performed within BCH and affiliated laboratories. The expected hematopathology service requirement is 10-12 weeks and on call coverage of 13 weekends annually.
