The Department of Veteran Affairs Outpatient Clinics is growing!

If you love the beach, enjoy music/art, and appreciate the military-look no further & come care for veterans as a Physician, Section Chief (Home Based Primary Care in Hampton, VA Medical Center!  Our Physician Provider will be based out of the main outpatient clinic, as we provide the best whole-health care for veterans in an outpatient setting! The patient pool for our Primary Care Physician is 1200 assigned veterans with an allotted daily patient load of 13-totaling 30-hours a week dedicated to face-to-face care.

The following duties are required of the position; they include, but are not limited it:

• Planning, organizing, developing, implementing, controlling, and refining comprehensive patient management, clinical support within HBPC.
• Provides services, technical counsel, supervision, and leadership guidance necessary to Section staff, to meet the care and treatment needs of patients within HBPC.
• Should be a forward-thinking provider who embraces Veteran-centered geriatrics, palliative, and hospice care delivery.
• Maintain records of meetings that include reports of conclusions, data recommendations, responsible person, actions taken and an evaluation of effectiveness of actions taken as appropriate.
• Develop policies and procedures to assure effective management, ethics, safety, communication, and quality within the section and between HBPC and other services within and outside of GEC.
• Review at least annually privilege templates and make recommendation to the Chief as needed for modifications.
• A comprehensive skill set of clinical and administrative expertise is required to meet the needs of diverse patient populations; as well as diverse members of the interdisciplinary team (IDT) and staff.
• Provides a full range of services including assessment and using standard of care techniques in providing quality of care within the specialties of geriatric primary care, and basic palliative medicine practice.
• Perform appropriate evaluations, diagnosis, and treatment of patients within HBPC.
• Provides full range of therapeutic interventions in assigned HVAMC units/programs related to HBPC and has clinical privileges to practice including assessment, evaluation, and management in these units/programs.
• Participates effectively in team meetings and treatment planning conferences and collaborates with IDT members in a manner that enhances coordination of comprehensive Veteran-centered care.
• Orders diagnostic tests and discriminates between normal/abnormal findings and makes appropriate treatment decisions based on available information.
• Plans and oversees completion of personal quality improvement initiatives or research related to program planning and improvement.

Teaching and learning

As a teaching hospital, Hampton VA Medical Center provides a full range of services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research. Our medical center is primarily affiliated with the Eastern Virginia Medical School. We offer residency training in all major medical, mental health and subspecialties. We also provide associated health training in nursing, psychology, optometry, social work, dietetics, and pharmacy.

Federal Retirement Plan:

• VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
• How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
• Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
• The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
• For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
• In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
• Disability Retirement
• Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
