The Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, Shreveport, LA, has an immediate opening for a full-time, board certified/board eligible Cardiac Electrophysiologist. Commonly known as the 'Ark-La-Tex', the point where Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas meet, Shreveport offers you the 'lagniappe', which means a little something extra!   The area is home to Barksdale Air Force Base, as well as numerous colleges and universities, theaters, lakes, golf courses, beautiful housing areas, churches, and great schools.   Highlights of this position include:

  • Competitive Starting Salary $325,000 $400,000
  • Work Schedule: Mon-Fri, 8am-4:30pm., on call as required
  • Clinical duties will focus on General cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology
  • Performs inpatient or outpatient cardiovascular consultation services
  • Support general cardiology service
  • Reviews physical requirements and conducts physical examination of various categories of military and civilian personnel

Additional Requirements:

  • American Board of Internal Medicine Certification in Cardiac Electrophysiology preferred.  We will also consider Cardiac Electrophysiology board eligible candidates.
  • Academic appointment at LSU School of Medicine is available but not required. (Board certification required if interested in academic appointment.)
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen. Non-Citizen candidates will be considered if a U.S. Citizen is not found
  • Full and unrestricted license from any U.S. State

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service

The Overton Brooks Veterans Administration Medical Center… serves a population of over 131,000 veterans residing within its primary service area which encompasses 15 northeast Texas counties, five southwestern Arkansas counties and 12 northwest Louisiana parishes. The Medical Center is affiliated with the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport and has sharing agreements with the 2d Medical Group at Barksdale AFB and LSU Health Sciences Center. The VAMC provides tertiary care in medicine, surgery, neurology and psychiatry and a broad spectrum of outpatient services. The Ambulatory Care Program provides primary care services at the VAMC and at Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) which were opened in Texarkana, Texas, Monroe, Louisiana, and Longview, Texas.
