Vice President Medical Affairs - Florida

Primary Accountabilities:  
  • Serves as a member of the Executive Management Staff of Community Hospitals. 
  • Mediates issues between individual physicians and medical or administrative departments. 
  • Promotes opportunities for management and Medical Staffs to develop closer working relationships and cooperative programs. 
  • Engage team members effectively at the top quartile of the Gallup survey or incrementally increase their engagement over time. 
  • Work collaboratively with the VPMA of the Tertiary Hospital and with the Health First Chief Medical Officer, including occasional cross-coverage of duties (such as during vacations). 
  • Participate in system-wide patient safety and quality initiatives. 
  • Participate in the system-wide Patient Safety Committee. 
  • Align the general medical staff and its leadership with quality/no harm initiatives. 
  • Act as a liaison between Hospital Boards, Management and the Medical Staffs in regard to patient care, performance improvement, quality & outcomes, patient safety, professional conduct, maintenance of professional standards, and compliance with Hospital and Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules & Regulations, & Policies. Take corrective action when required. 
  • Act as an advisor to the Community Hospital President, VP/Site Administrators and Medical Staff Presidents on medical and administrative issues and on questions of policy and public relations as they relate to the medical staff and clinical services. 
  • Attend meetings of the Hospital Boards, Medical Staffs and Health First committees as requested by the Community Hospitals President and Health First; serves as ex officio member of all Medical Staff Committees and attends Medical Staff Executive, Credentials Committee, and Quality Committee meetings whenever possible. 
  • Oversee the review, analysis and evaluation of patient care in the hospitals by working with Medical Staff officers, Service Chiefs, and Committees, and assisting them to carry out their respective functions. 
  • Direct and monitor quality assessment programs for the Medical Staff departments. 
  • Assist in meeting various physician performance metrics such as core measures, 30-day readmissions, etc. 
  • Recommend establishment of necessary criteria and professional standards regarding application for appointment to the Medical Staffs and monitors strict adherence to those criteria and standards that are established. Function as a subject matter expert in medical staff credentialing. 
  • Serve as an advisory member of the hospital Credentials Committees and be responsible for validating the qualifications of applicants to join the Medical Staffs, and assure that all prerequisites for appointment as outlined in the Bylaws and hospital policies are met before an application is submitted to the Credentials Committees. Assist the Credentials Committees in performing background investigation of applicants as needed. 
  • Provide a comprehensive orientation for new Medical Staff members. 
  • Participate in the improvement of physician HCAHPS communication scores. 
  • Assist in the investigation and take action as appropriate in response to complaints made by patients or associates related to members of the Medical Staff. 
  • Administratively supervise the operations of Community Hospitals’ Medical Staff Offices and Credentials / Verification Offices, including budgets, and Associate Performance Reviews. 
  • Assist the Community Hospitals and the Medical Staffs, as required by the hospitals, in the performance of utilization review and cost containment functions. 
  • Work collaboratively with the case management staff to improve patient flow. 
  • Assist with corporate initiatives to provide growth and development including participation on system-wide Service Lines as needed. 

Qualifications Required:  

  • Must be licensed to practice medicine in Florida and certified in a specialty by a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties or an American Osteopathic Association Specialty Certifying Board. 
  • Must meet the criteria to be an Active Staff member at least one Community Hospital Medical Staff. 
  • Must have two-to-three years of previous Medical Staff leadership experience or other comparable broad knowledge and exposure to Medical-Administrative activities. Advanced degrees and/or certifications are preferred (MBA, CPE, CSSBB, etc.). 
  • Must have actively practiced medicine in his/her specialty for a minimum of five years. 
  • Must have excellent rapport with physicians and members of management. 
  • Must have clear and effective oral and written communication skills. 
  • Must have an historical track record of effectively dealing with conflict and discipline in an effective manner.
