Responsible for overseeing the adherence to professional standards for the medical group’s employed physicians in specific area of specialty. The AVP, Medical Operations explores, proposes, and assists in implementing innovative models of team-based care across the care continuum, in a triadic relationship with Business and Clinical Operations leadership. Responsibilities include: direction and decision-making, financial performance, medical staff education, compliance with regulatory agencies, patient satisfaction, provider productivity and engagement, and the promotion of a Partners-in-Caring culture. Minimum Qualifications
Education: Graduate from an accredited School of Medicine
Licenses/Certifications:
- Current license to Medical Doctor license in state of Texas
- Current Federal Drug Enforcement Agency license
- Current Basic Life Saving (BLS) OR Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification
- CPE and FACHE preferred
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in a Clinical Specialty
Experience / Knowledge / Skills:
- Ten (10) total years of experience: Five (5) years of recent experience as a clinically practicing physician in area of specialty will be supporting, Five (5) years of supervisory/physician leadership experience
- Eligible for Memorial Hermann credentialing as a medical staff member
- Strong financial management skills and expertise in change leadership

Principal Accountabilities
Managing Physician/Provider Performance
- Serve as a member of the Performance/Data Analytics (PDA), Policy and Process Improvement (PPI), Evidence Based Care (EBC), and Workforce Development governing councils for MHMG and work with or report to all other councils.
- Directly review data analytics reporting quarterly with all assigned providers and with regional Directors for their assigned providers. With the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) develop and implement process for annual performance review for all providers.
- Along with AVP Business Operations and regional DBO and DMO (Dyads), determine and review the annual Quality Performance Incentive for all providers where contractually applicable and work with Finance and Quality officers to implement and distribute other such quality incentives that may be available in the future.
- Participate in the continuous development of the dyadic management model with the AVP Business Operations, regional Dyads, and by extension into the office management setting.
- Develop content, review, attend and participate in MHMG Operations Report meetings.
- Legal/Regulatory Compliance: serve as primary performance manager and coach including, but not limited to, initiatives targeting coding, documentation, HIPAA, timely completion and risk management for assigned providers; and mentor and evaluate the regional DBO’s in this activity.
- Show annual progress toward the completion of the “Physician in Management” courses through the American College of Physician Executives, “ACPE” and then demonstrate continuous health care management education development with the ACPE, MGMA, AMGA, or progress toward an MMM, MHA, MBA, MPH, JD or MHMG Management approved curriculum. Work with the regional DBO’s to assist them in the development of a personal curriculum to achieve the above stated goals.
Quality & Safety
- Work with the CMO, Chief Quality Officer, the PDA council, system/ACO councils and payer contracting groups in the annual review and updating of quality indicators and the establishment of targets and benchmarks and integration with overall system and community reporting. Work with the Director of Medical Informatics and the AVP of Clinical Operations to incorporate these measures into the EHR and clinical workflow. Work with the AVP of Clinical Operations in the implementation of clinical practice/workflow design processes and policies at practice sites promulgated to produce improvement in preventive health, disease management, and patient safety; and hardwiring these changes into human and EHR system flows.
- Mentor and supervise the regional DMO’s in the deployment and implementation of treatment guidelines for providers as developed and endorsed by the MHMG governance council.
- Serve as the secondary contact for professional and ambulatory peer review issues and lead or coordinate a peer review organization (PRO) for providers within the medical group.
Customer Service/Satisfaction
- Champion provider collaboration in patient satisfaction initiatives and work with regional DMO’s to improve provider participation in to these efforts.
- Collaborate directly with HR, customer experience management, and regional DMO’s in strategies for enhancing customer service.
- Work with regional DMO’s to develop and implement direct provider support, scripting and communication techniques to enhance the physician role in customer experience.
Operational Efficiency
- Along with AVP Business Operations and AVP Clinical Operations, and regional DMO’s, lead the implementation, deployment and execution of all LEAN clinical workflow projects with the corresponding region.
- With the AVP of Clinical Operation, regional DMO’s, and ACO care managers, lead the deployment and execution of Patient Centered Medical Home team based patient management strategies in managing larger patient panels and NCQA certification status.
- Work with AVP Business Operations, AVP Clinical Operations and system financial analysts in the development of system wide supply chain management strategies and practice site standardization policies.
- In concert with the AVP Business Operations, meet with the Director of Finance to develop an understanding of budget goals and limitations, with the purpose of integrating operational requirements with financial realities to optimize clinical operations within the current financial environment.
- In concert with the AVP Business Operations, meet with AVP of Physician Revenue Cycle to develop an understanding of revenue cycle issues and challenges, with the purpose of developing and implementing operational processes to optimize collections, reimbursement, and cash flow for the organization.
Human Relations/Organizational Development
- In concert with the regional DMO’s develop/deploy Physician satisfaction initiatives.
- Mentor and evaluate regional DMO’s as the primary coach for CME and certification maintenance and well as provider based professional and management development. Work with credentialing department to create a systematic approach to monitoring licensure, board certification, facility credentialing, and regulatory permits (DEA) for all providers. Work with regional DMO’s to ensure all providers remain current in all the above requirements.
Network Development
- In order to enhance the value to the customer in a clinically integrated network, work directly with providers and regional DMO’s, MHMD AVP of Clinical Administration, MHMD Region leaders, and MHMD Medical Director for Primary Care to enhance MHHS network utilization to meet the Physician Organization goals and work with senior DBO, Director Medical Informatics, and Chief Quality Officer to monitor compliance and provide feedback on network utilization rates to Chief Medical Officer for MHMG and MHMD.
- Engage in direct, frequent, ad hoc personal contact, coaching, and mentoring with assigned providers and regional DMO’s and MHMD Region leaders in a matrix relationship with MHMD Medical Director for Primary Care and MHMD Director for network management.
- As a part of annual strategic planning, identify sites across the system for recruitment, retention, acquisition and mid-level supplementation opportunities and work with regional DMO’s to do the same.
- In concert with the regional DMO’s, identify sites and providers for recognition on the basis of outstanding quality, satisfaction and operational excellence.
- Along with the Physician network development team and business operations, coordinate and help moderated biannual regional networking meetings.
- Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
- Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
