The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson announces a faculty position opening for a Director, Apheresis Services/Associate Director of Transfusion Medicine at Banner University Medical Center Tucson (BUMCT). The successful candidate must have strong knowledge and experience in all aspects of transfusion medicine, including therapeutic apheresis and stem cell collection and processing, immunohematology, transfusion products management, coagulation, and regulatory compliance. The candidate will receive an academic appointment commensurate with experience in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of the University of Arizona. The Department plays a key role in providing diagnosis as well as treatment and prevention of diseases for the people of Southern Arizona and beyond through patient care, education, and research.
The Transfusion Medicine service at the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine supports patient care at BUMCT, a 649-bed tertiary hospital. We have specialty services in pediatric and adult hematology and oncology, multi-organ transplantation, critical care, multi-specialty surgery and academic medicine and obstetrics. In 2023, more than 24,000 blood products were transfused along with the performance of 109 bone marrow transplants, 37 chimeric antigen receptor (CAR T cell) therapies and 100 donor lymphocyte infusions. The Department supports stem cell processing, storage, and infusion for transplant as well as collection and processing of commercial and clinical trial immune effector cells.
We seek an excellent apheresis and transfusion medicine physician with outstanding knowledge and experience in all aspects of clinical transfusion medicine and coagulation practice and honed organizational abilities to lead the Apheresis Service at BUMCT. A successful candidate will envision the opportunity of crafting a robust apheresis and cell collection program, supported by an eager hospital system and hematology/oncology group, with the expectation of FACT accreditation and continued expansion. Much of the responsibility will focus on apheresis in program-building and education with coverage of transfusion medicine/blood bank responsibilities also expected. Excellent opportunities exist for collaborative research with a variety of departments, including hematology/oncology, surgery, and pediatrics.
