Chief Hematology Oncology at Central Arkansas VA Health

The Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS), near the beautiful Ozark Mountains, is seeking a full-time MD/DO Hematologist/Oncologist in Little Rock.  The ideal candidate will be Board Certified or Board Eligible and an effective leader of high-performing physicians.  Preferred experience in leadership and administration, clinical teaching, and research.  Our medicine section is a very collaborative and high-functioning group of physician leadership and administrative support.  Our clinical areas are filled with staff who are here to serve the veterans.  Little Rock is the capital city of Arkansas, located in the central part of the state.  It is a wonderful place to live.  Arkansans' can spend their weekends exploring the historic Arkansas State Capitol, wandering through the Arkansas Art Centers and museums, or enjoying the outdoors and the beautiful Ozark Mountains.  With a National Airport reachable in a 15-minute drive, Little Rock is also a great place to live and explore the nation. 

Highlights of this opportunity:

  • Potential starting base salary range:  $350,000-$400,000

  • Daily work schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm;  
    • 1-2 day(s) per week in clinic, and shared inpatient rounds

    • 2-3 days section leadership responsibilities

  • Paid Time Off: Total of 50–55 days per year 
  •  
  • No Physician Employment Contract, you can moonlight or work in other facilities as long as you do not treat veterans there.

  • Skilled in the best practices for  Hematology Oncology diagnostic, intervention, and therapeutics 

Highlights of this opportunity:

  • Potential starting base salary range: $280,000-$350,000
  • Daily schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm; On-call responsibilities are shared with other Hemonc  in the section, which includes nights, weekends and holidays, no more than 10 days per month for full-time physician.  A full hospitalist team manages most weeknight and weekend issues based on your preferences.   
  • Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – Assistance with payment of outstanding medical school loans up to $200K over 5 years, if approved.
  • Paid Time Off: 50–55 days per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays, and possible 5 days paid for CME)
  • No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting
  • Plus additional financial incentives, such as recruitment, and relocation.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
