VA San Diego- Spinal Cord Injury-Trained PM&R Needed!

The VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) is seeking a Spinal Cord Injury-Trained PM&R physician as a staff physician at the Jennifer Moreno Medical Center Spinal Cord Injury / Disorders (SCI/D) Center in La Jolla, CA.

The VASDHS SCI/D staff physician is primarily responsible for providing medical care for Veterans with SCI/D and coordinating multidisciplinary services for Veterans with SCI/D throughout their lifespan.

The staff physician will see Veterans in both the inpatient and outpatient clinical setting. The majority time will be devoted to patient care, with the remaining time set aside for allied health provider supervision, education, performance improvement activities, and research to improve patient care and activities sufficient to maintain proficiency in state-of-the-art rehabilitation/medical care.

 Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Unrestricted U.S. Medical License
  • Successful completion of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) accredited residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Neurology, or Internal Medicine.
  • Experience working with people with SCI/D and managing their rehabilitation and medical complications.
  • Knowledge of SCI/D and similar neurological conditions, rehabilitation, and medical care.
  • Knowledge of preventive medicine, primary care for SCI/D, non-physician healthcare roles, and healthcare evaluation.
  • Experience with team leadership and understanding group dynamics.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ABMS and SCIM sub-specialty board certification preferred.
  • Experience working with people with SCI/D, multiple sclerosis, ALS and neurorehabilitation in an inpatient or outpatient setting.
  • Experience or clinical interest in leading interdisciplinary neuro-rehabilitation programs
  • Experience or interest in research related to SCI/D

Work Schedule: M-F 0745-1615 (Position is not eligible for telework).  The SCI/D staff physician also provides home call coverage from for the SCI/D provider group, approximately 1 week in every 8 weeks, and 1 weekend half-day on site.

Our medical center is primarily affiliated with the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. We also have a partnership with San Diego University through the VA Nursing Academy, which provides funding to help VA health care facilities nationwide expand and strengthen their nursing programs.

  • As Co-Investigators in a VA funded “Lung Precision Oncology Program” award (11/1/2020 -10/31/2025), VA San Diego se cured additional funding of $180,000 per year for the next three years to hire a dedicated Nurse Practitioner to support our Lung Cancer Screening Program and a Coordinator to further support the Pulmonary Section’s more general Lung Cancer diagnosis and care platforms.
  • Dr. Michael Lam received a VA Career Development Award for a research project titled “Impact of sleep disruption on immune responses in sepsis."
