Ophthalmologists are trained physicians with significant experience in the field of Ophthalmology. They provide both clinical, surgical, and administrative Ophthalmology services at VA Northern California Health Care System (VA NCHCS) sites. Ophthalmologists are MD physicians who have completed four years of medical school followed by an internship and a three-year ophthalmology residency; training in all aspects of eye care (basic, intermediate, and advanced). Many VHA ophthalmologists undergo additional years of training, including one- or two-year fellowships in glaucoma, retinal and vitreous diseases, cornea and external diseases, uveitis (inflammation), neuro-ophthalmology, orbit (eye socket) and oculoplastic surgery, or strabismus (eye muscle) surgery, which allows them to bring specialized expertise to the VA.
