Section Chief/Assistant Chief of Primary Care Medicine

The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System is searching for a Section Chief/Assistant Chief of Primary Care Medicine for our Sarasota Community Based Outpatient Clinic and associated clinics in Bradenton and Port Charlotte.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Fully accountable for the effective and efficient management and supervision of Primary Care Medicine Services at the Sarasota Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC), the Bradenton CBOC and the Port Charlotte CBOC.
  • oversee the development of Primary Care structure to include the implementation and coordination of health care emphasizing continuity and comprehensiveness within established VA guidelines to populations undifferentiated by gender, disease and organ system, and the implementation of VA/VHA/VISN/BPVAHCS initiatives within the scope of primary care services.
  • Assist in the direction, coordination, and supervision of clinical and programmatic efforts for the delivery of Primary care Medicine in the CWBY Bay Pines VAMC and its community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs). 
  • Serve as a provider for patients who require care within the assigned clinic structure within the Department. 
  • Responsible for the management of patients to include examination, medical care management, coordination of consultation, referral of patients, development and operation of quality assurance and utilization programs including peer reviews. 
  • Coordinate health care needs according to guidelines established by the Department of Veterans Affairs and sound medical practice.
  • The successful candidate possesses excellent clinical skills, is a strong communicator and brings demonstrated people skills, care coordination and organizational management. 
  • Expected to be committed to an interdisciplinary approach to patient care delivery. 
  • Must have the ability to prioritize and to make appropriate decisions.   

Functions or Scope of Assigned Duties: The overall responsibilities of the Section Chief of Primary Care are but not limited to

  • Clinical (25% to 40%)
  • Administrative (60% to 75%
  • Education/Research (0% to 25%

Preferred Experience:

  • Board certified in Internal Medicine, or Family Medicine
  • VA Primary Care Leadership experience preferred. 
  • The physician will have significant experience clinical experience in primary care, urgent care, emergency medicine or equivalent clinical background.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel

  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
