Quality of Life

Greater Binghamton is situated between the Catskills and the Finger Lakes in the Southern Tier of upstate New York.  Broome County combines small-town charm with the cultural attractions of a major city. The birthplace of IBM and Link flight simulators, it is home to Binghamton University, the premier public university in the Northeast.

The “Triple Cities” of Binghamton, Johnson City and Endicott form the centerpiece of the region, which consistently receives high quality-of-life ratings from national surveys, and is especially noteworthy for its proud and diverse ethnic heritage.

Broome County and its surrounding communities are home to many cultural, sports and recreational events and facilities. including the Roberson Museum and Science Center, Kopernik Observatory, Link Planetarium, Forum and Anderson Center performing arts facilities, minor-league baseball and hockey franchises, the PGA ChampionTour’s annual Dick’s Sporting Goods Open Golf Tournament and some of the top golf courses, ski resorts and trout streams in the Northeast. Nearby are the Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown and the Corning Glass Center, and the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, PA.

A delightful variety of housing options are available, in settings ranging from suburban to small-town to distinctly rural, all within an easy commute. Home prices are extremely affordable compared to other East Coast urban markets, and the area is known for its low crime rate, clean environment and "high quality of community life.” Families can choose from many educational options, as the region abounds in academically excellent parochial and public schools. Along with Binghamton University, part of the State University of New York system, there is a wide array of other colleges close by, including Cornell and Syracuse Universities.

Centrally located at the hub of three interstate highways, with convenient access to Pennsylvania, New York City, Syracuse, the Adirondacks and Canada, the area is also served by major airlines at the Binghamton Regional Airport.
