OPPORTUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

The Department of Surgery and the Division of Intra-Abdominal Transplantation at Loyola University Medical Center (LUMC) is searching for an outstanding, highly motivated transplant surgeon to become the Surgical Director of the Liver Transplant Program.

The transplant program at LUMC has demonstrated an annual growth for the past three years, is a CMS/UNOS certified program, and is a member in good standing for liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation. To support the growth and fulfill the educational mission of LUMC, an ASTS Transplant Surgery Fellowship was established in 2020 to expand on the Institution's educational mission.

Enjoy a collaborative environment with a group of 6 transplant surgeons, 5 transplant hepatologists, and a team of transplant nephrologists, Surgical PAs, Transplant fellows and APPs.

The selected candidate will be expected to support outreach activities conducive to expanding and promoting innovation and high-quality care for patients with End Stage Live Disease.

Expectations include: 

  • Outstanding outcomes in clinical care supporting the Institution's academic mission. 
  • Administrative responsibilities related to the liver transplant program including outreach activities.
  • Active participation in the education of medical students, residents, and fellows.

Certification Requirements:  

  • Associate or Full Professor level 
  • Must have completed an ASTS certified program or a program of equivalent certification.
  • Board eligible or board certified by the American Board of Surgery or equivalent.
  • Licensed to practice in the State of Illinois at the time of hire. 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Successful candidates will have experience and a passion for leadership, program building and working in a multidisciplinary approach with colleagues in numerous specialties.
  • The successful candidate must have 5-10 years of liver transplant experience, encompassing both deceased and living donor transplants.
  • Experience in multi-organ donor recovery for both DBD and DCD is required. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with split liver transplants, with excellent track record in DCD liver transplants.
  • Experience with Normothermic Machine perfusion and Normothermic Regional perfusion technology are highly desirable.
  • Experience in Hepatobiliary Surgery is required. HPB Certification by the AHPBA is desirable. 
  • Robotic skills in both hepato-biliary surgery and kidney transplantation are highly desirable.
  • A proven academic track record as a transplant surgeon in education and research is highly desirable. Educational interests in medical student general surgery resident and transplant surgery residents and transplant fellows is expected. 
  • Leadership/Administrative experience is highly desirable. 
  • The candidate will participate in developing policy and procedures to meet regulatory standards and be actively involved in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement initiatives.
  • Partner with the Medical Director to build a cohesive multidisciplinary team.

Loyola University Medical Center (LUMC) is a 61 acre medical center campus conveniently located in Maywood, 13 miles west of the Chicago Loop. LUMC is a quaternary care facility with 547 licensed beds, a Level I Trauma Center, nationally recognized Burn Center, renowned Transplant Center and a special 20-bed unit for patients undergoing stem cell transplant. The center provides top hospital care in all medical specialties, including orthopedics, nephrology, cardiology, cancer, ophthalmology and surgery.

LUMC's Stroke Center has been honored by the American Stroke Association for its expert collaboration of professionals from emergency medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, rehabilitative services, social work, nutrition, pharmacy and other specialties.

The medical center was again designated a Level III Perinatal Center by the Illinois Department of Public Health, a designation recognizing centers that have demonstrated the highest level of expertise in caring for women with high-risk pregnancies, their unborn babies and critically ill newborns.

LUMC has a close partnership with Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital. Most faculty members have joint appointments at Hines and Loyola students and resident physicians rotate through Hines as part of their training. Researchers from Loyola and Hines collaborate closely on many federally funded studies
