We are looking for a skilled Nephrologist at the Richmond Veterans Affairs Medical Center VA Richmond Health Care | Veterans Affairs in Richmond, Virginia. You are expected to provide comprehensive patient care in the form of consultative inpatient and outpatient Nephrology patient care at the Central Virginian VA Health Care System, Medical Service, Dialysis Section.

The Richmond VA Medical Center, located in Richmond, Virginia Visit Richmond VA | Information for Visiting the Richmond, VA Region, is a level 1a 349-bed facility offering primary, secondary, and tertiary health care in medicine, surgery, neurology, rehabilitation medicine, intensive care, intermediate care, precision oncology, acute and sustaining spinal cord injury, polytrauma care, skilled nursing home care, and palliative care. The medical center has a strong and mutually beneficial affiliation with the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Residency programs exist in virtually all general and specialty areas of medicine, rehabilitation, surgery, psychiatry, and dentistry.

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Participate in all aspect of outpatient and inpatient nephrology care.
  • Proficient in the procedural skill including hemodialysis, CRRT, peritoneal dialysis and kidney biopsies.
  • Provide Pre-kidney transplant and post kidney transplant evaluation.
  • Shares after hour call responsibilities with section physicians in rotation.
  • Consultative input to outpatient and inpatient care.
  • Communicates and documents with clarity to patients and medical personnel to coordinate patient care.
  • Collaborate with midlevel providers and physician colleagues with clear communication and documentation.
  • Participate in the educational programs of the renal and medicine department including taking didactics to medical student, residents, and fellows.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities and comply with rules and regulations of the agency, facility, and department.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel

  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
