Medical Director, SICU
The Ohio State University College of Medicine and the Wexner Medical Center seek an academic Acute Care Surgeon to join the Department of Surgery as our next SICU Medical Director. Academic rank and track commensurate with academic record and experience.

Position Overview

The Unit?based Medical Director (UBMD) for the SICU is a seasoned physician, of exceptional clinical reputation, who is seen by their peers as an influencer with demonstrated success in creating collaborative interdisciplinary teams. The UBMD will work in the dyad model, in direct partnership with a Nurse Leader (NL) with oversight of the operating unit to advance operational excellence, as defined by the Critical Care Area Medical Director. They will also work closely with their leadership partners to influence, educate, continuously coach, and hold staff accountable for meeting their professional and system responsibilities.

The Division of Trauma, Critical Care, and Burn will be led by “in-bound” Division Director Dr. Nathan Mowery, MD. The Division concentrates efforts in clinical care, research, and education in all phases of Acute Care Surgery including burns. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center on the main campus is an established Level I Trauma Center seeing approximately 2,700 trauma patients. The new SICU director will have the opportunity to transition the service into a brand-new state if the art tower in Spring of 2026. The new SICU will be a 30-bed unit. This will replace the current University Hospital SICU; staffed by intensivists, fellows, residents and advanced practice providers. Population includes burns, traumas, non-cardiac transplant, and surgical patients. There is an additional 12 bed oncology SICU in the James Comprehensive Cancer Hospital; staffed by intensivists and advanced practice providers. Both SICUs engage in a multidisciplinary care model including the provider teams, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, dietitians, case managers and social workers. The SICU is supported in part by a joint surgical critical care and anesthesia critical care fellowship program with six fellows. The SICU has 18 Adult Acute Care Advanced Practice Providers and three specialty pharmacists.

The Medical Center has over 1,300 patient beds, performs over 44,000 surgeries per year, and has over 1.7 million annual outpatient visits. Established in 1914, the Ohio State Department of Surgery has a long and respected tradition of excellence in clinical care, research and education. With Timothy M. Pawlik, MD, PhD, MPH as Chair, The Department of Surgery is composed of nine surgical specialty divisions and seven centers. Collectively, the Department of Surgery performs over 21,000 cases annually and was ranked in the top 10 according to the Blue Ridge rankings for NIH funding and ranked number 8 by Doximity for surgical residency reputation among surgery departments nationally.
