Blackstone Rural Track — St. Francis Family Medicine Residency

The Blackstone Family Medicine Residency Program was initially founded in 1970 and unfortunately was closed in 2005 when the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education regulated that all residency programs had to be located within 30 minutes of the admitting hospital. During the program’s many years in operation, the residency graduated many strong Family Medicine physicians that are all still practicing within the local surrounding areas.

In 2013, the St. Francis Family Medicine Residency Program was able to develop a rural track, which allowed for the re-opening of training to occur in Blackstone! The Blackstone Family Practice clinic is located about one hour from the St. Francis Medical Center and is situated in Blackstone, Virginia, a rural town of 3,400. The town provides care to a heavily underserved population.

The Blackstone program recruits two residents each year and places particular importance on residents who are interested in working in rural and underserved areas. The program includes a focus on outpatient procedures that would be beneficial to physicians working in underserved areas. Residents complete their inpatient training and most elective rotations at the main St. Francis site and their outpatient training at the Blackstone clinic.
