Trinity Health Of New England – the region’s largest nonprofit health system – is seeking a Board-Certified Addiction Medicine physician to be our next Medical Director of the Addiction Consult Service at Mercy Medical Center located in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintains active understanding of all applicable SAMHSA regulations.
  • Maintains active understanding of all applicable DPH regulations.
  • Maintains active understanding of all other involved regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies.
  • Provides appropriate interactions with persons employed or contracted with various regulatory agencies.
  • Collaborates with other members of leadership teams in strategy planning, determination if resource distribution, and assuring quality care.
  • Maintains compliance with all Medical Staff Bylaws.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Either through oversight or direct services, ensures that complete and comprehensive addiction medicine focused consultations, including appropriate histories and exams, follow-up notes and orders, are provided for each patient consulted on the addiction consult service that are consistent with regulatory requirements and clinical need.
  • If a psychiatrist, provides direct care and coverage for the psychiatric consultation-liaison service as assigned, and if not a psychiatrist, works collaboratively with the psychiatric consultation-liaison and pain management/palliative care consultation team to ensure coordinated care for relevant patients.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills in the practice of addiction medicine, including formulation of diagnosis, determining service and level of care needs, initiating, and revising medication treatment for substance use disorders as appropriate, and coordination of care.
  • Communicates effectively with inpatient hospitalists and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to discuss assessments, and coordinates and implements the treatment and discharge plans as it relates to substance use disorders.
  • Develops or maintains relevant training or clinical protocols for the addiction consult or related services. Provides education to, collaborates with, and maintains relationships with hospital departments regarding the addiction consult or related services.
  • Performs or participates in activities that ensure quality care and evaluation of services.
  • Participates in telephone or other on-call schedules or activities for Addiction Consult or other Addiction Services as assigned.
  • Provides supervision to PAs or NPs assigned to Addiction Consult or other assigned services.
  • Provides appropriate training and supervision to medical students, residents, or other trainees.
  • Assures completion of chart entries and signatures by medical staff consistent with regulatory guidelines and medical staff bylaws.
  • Collaborates and maintains effective relationships with other care providers in the community as appropriate.
  • Assures clinical care delivered is consistent with evidence-based guidelines.

Requirements

  • Psychiatrist, Internal Medicine, or Family Medicine physician, licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with board certification in Addiction Psychiatry or Addiction Medicine preferred. Alternatively at a minimum, must have at least one year of clinical substance use disorder treatment experience and 40 hours of CME in treating addicted persons within the past year, or within the first twelve months of employment.
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical School or School of Osteopathy. Completed residency training.
  • Licensed by the Board of Registration of Medicine, Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Must hold valid DEA and DEA-X certificate and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration number.
  • Must meet requirements for membership on the Medical Staff of Mercy Medical Center with appropriate credentialing.  Must maintain recredentialing per Medical Staff Bylaws.
