OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY

Faculty for this position will enhance the breadth and depth of scholarship, teaching, and diversity within the Department of Pediatrics and Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Health. Faculty will have their primary academic appointment in the Duke Department of Pediatrics and optional secondary appointment in the Department of Population Health Sciences.

Faculty in the Department of Pediatrics will contribute to the department’s vision to advance science, training, and clinical service delivery across the Duke SOM and the Duke Health System (DHS). To accomplish this vision, faculty will develop their portfolio across all three missions (research, education & training, clinical) as appropriate, and are expected to actively collaborate with investigators, educators, and clinicians across the organization.

WORK PERFORMED

The precise breakdown of a faculty’s work across all three missions of the department (research, education, and training, clinical) is expected to vary between faculty and will be subject to ongoing review and adjustment by the faculty member’s division chief, department chair, Population Health Area Leader, and faculty member.

Research Activities

The faculty will promote and participate in methodological and applied clinical research. Faculty will have the necessary skills to conduct or oversee their proposed research. As appropriate, this includes an understanding of any regulatory requirements for data management and handling, analyses, and reporting. Faculty are expected to apply for and win intra- and extra-mural funding. This includes awards driven primarily by the faculty, as well as collaborative awards with others across the SOM. Faculty are also expected to present the results of their research work both internally and externally and submit it for publication to peer-reviewed journals.  It is expected that liaising will result in productive scientific collaborations as evidenced by joint presentations and publications, grant applications, and other academic output.

Education and Training Activities

Educational activities include but are not limited to: mentoring; giving lectures; leading seminars and small group teachings; and bedside education. As appropriate, faculty are encouraged to collaborate with educators and mentors across the SOM.

Clinical Service Activities

Faculty will provide clinical services to patients at one of the 3 primary care clinic locations, 2 half-day sessions per week (usual definition of sessions “Monday through Friday, 8:00 am-12:00 pm or 1:00 am-5:00pm”) and participate in call schedule as per standard, including evening pager call and after hours urgent care pediatric clinic, rotating between Saturday 8:00 am-12:00 pm and Wednesday 5:00pm -8:00pm.

Minimum Requirements

An MD degree and demonstrated commitment towards research, education, or clinical service are required. Additional training in academic general pediatrics, or degrees such as MPH, MS, or PhD are preferred but not required. Research interests around nutrition, physical activity, child obesity prevention or treatment is preferred. Significant prior experience includes but is not limited to clinical research experience, grant and manuscript preparation, and mentoring. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, leadership and interpersonal skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and sponsors are essential.
