VCU Health’s Pauley Heart Center is currently seeking a medical director and general cardiologist to join and lead our cardiac team in Tappahannock, Virginia. The ideal candidate will be an experienced general cardiologist seeking a practice that will allow them to use the full spectrum of their clinical, leadership, and teaching skills to serve a community of roughly 70,000 people. This position presents a cardiologist with the opportunity to make a meaningful and significant impact on their local community, while also leveraging the myriad resources available within an academic health system—that is, VCU Health, based in Richmond, Virginia. In 2020, VCU Health expanded services into Tappahannock, a beautiful, historic river town about 45 miles northeast of Richmond. VCU Health Tappahannock provides the region with diagnostic, ambulatory, emergency, inpatient, and critical care cardiac services. VCU Health’s Pauley Heart Center is one of the preeminent heart centers in the U.S., and the successful candidate will join a team dedicated to both academic discovery and outstanding clinical care for its patients.

The medical director will:

  • further develop the cardiology services offered at Tappahannock to include advanced imaging, electrophysiology, and subspeciality clinics for targeted patient populations;
  • play a key role in both partnering with and bolstering the strength of the local primary care network; and
  • advance health equity through outreach to underserved populations in Tappahannock’s six-county service area.

The medical director will also be involved in strategic growth planning and responsible for oversight and teaching of cardiology residents and fellows on rotation in the hospital.

Position responsibilities include:

  • Outpatient, inpatient, and consultative clinical services.
  • Collaboration across hospital departments, including primary care, hospitalists, ED, and imaging.
  • Collaboration with other VCU Health cardiology providers to set and implement appropriate standards of practice related to cardiac care.
  • Provider scheduling for clinic and hospital coverage.
  • Serve as liaison to the VCU Health’s Cardiology service line and contribute to health system goals at the local level.
  • Periodically present reviews in clinical management discussions at VCU Health Cardiology and Department of Internal Medicine conferences.
  • Support clinical research protocols as needed.
  • Participate in quality, safety, and efficiency initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

  • Clinically oriented
  • Possess sufficient research and teaching experience to be eligible for academic appointment
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and work with a large multidisciplinary program
  • Will be expected to participate in teaching and fellowship programs
