This is a Direct Hire Open Continuous Announcement (OCA) for Physician positions in multiple specialties for the Indian Health Service at various locations, including outpatient primary care clinics, and critical access hospitals (providing primary care, ED, inpatient services.

Specialties include Primary Care (FP, IM, Med/Peds, Peds), ED, and inpatient/hospitalists physician positions. Hospital site positions may provide hybrid coverage, including outpatient services.

Outpatient only sites provide medical home based primary care, hiring Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Med/Peds physicians.

Critical Access Hospital sites provide ED services (Emergency Medicine preferred, with Family Medicine considered if sufficient experience), inpatient/hospitalist services (often hybrid positions with some outpatient coverage), and outpatient primary care. Outpatient positions may also assist with coverage in other areas

DUTIES: Responsible for the practice of medicine or direct service to patients as relevant to the specialty of the position, involving the performance of diagnostic, preventative, or therapeutic services. Prescribe or administer treatment, therapy, medication, vaccination, and other specialized medical care to treat, prevent illness, disease, or injury. Order, perform, and interpret tests and analyze records, reports, and examination information to diagnose patient's condition. Collect, record, and maintain patient information, such as medical history, reports, and examinations results. Experience with electronic health records is preferred. Monitor patients' conditions and progress and reevaluate treatments as necessary.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association (external link)Association of American Medical Colleges (external link)Liaison Committee on Medical Education (external link)Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association (external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (external link), a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination

Licensure: applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below.

  • Internship Program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) (external link).
  • Residency Program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association (external link), (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
  • Fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training.


GS-15 - Additional Requirements:

Five (5) years of graduate training (e.g., residency and/or fellowship) in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training (e.g., work experience in the specialty after residency).

Final Year Residents: Applications will be accepted from applicants who are in their final year of residency and expected to complete their residency training within the next 12 months. Such applicants are required to provide evidence of meeting all position requirements before they can enter on duty.

Selective Placement FactorIn addition to the basic requirements and minimum qualifications, the following has been determined to be essential to perform the duties of this position:

  • Board Certification or Board Eligible in the specialty/subspecialty of the position is determined to be essential to perform the duties and responsibility of this position.
