Cleveland Clinic is seeking a Director of Sports Medicine Research. The Director will be a nationally recognized physician leader in both practice and research with impressive credentials. Primary duties and responsibilities will be to lead and grow the robust clinical research programs within the Center for Sports Medicine. This includes ongoing NIH and Arthritis Foundation funded studies as well as standard-of-care clinical outcomes research. In addition, they will be expected to foster collaborations with investigators in the Musculoskeletal Research Center (MSRC) in order to facilitate the growth of both basic and translational research programs in sports medicine. The Director will help to promote the Cleveland Clinic Sports Medicine mission to advance the health, treatment, and performance of active individuals through the application of scientific methods and discoveries to improve clinical care and outcomes, and serve as a mentor to residents, fellows and junior faculty interested in academic medicine.

The successful candidate will be a nationally recognized physician-scientist with a distinguished career of academic accomplishment. They must be eligible for licensure in the State of Ohio, Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and also possess subspecialty certification in Sports Medicine. An established record of success in research (as defined by external grant support and/or role as PI or site PI on a major multicenter grant) or requisite training and passion to pursue success in funded programmatic research in sports medicine must be demonstrated. A faculty appointment at a rank commensurate with experience at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University will be available and encouraged.

The Cleveland Clinic’s clinical departments of Orthopaedics and Rheumatology are ranked among the top in the US.  As a result, our researchers have access to data and samples from thousands of patients receiving musculoskeletal clinical care annually.  Institutional data and computing infrastructure integrate system-wide demographic, socioeconomic, disease, surgical/treatment, imaging (both clinical and novel quantitative) and patient experience data, as well as healthcare utilization and cost.  In 2022, a central biorepository was founded that enables systematic prospective banking of tissue samples from patients undergoing surgery for musculoskeletal conditions. Cleveland Clinic researchers are also deeply engaged with the Cleveland Clinic – IBM Discovery Accelerator - a ten-year partnership to accelerate biomedical discovery and innovation through novel computing platforms and artificial intelligence.

The Director of Sports Medicine Research will report directly to the Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. They will work with the research directors of the other orthopaedic sections, as well as the Vice Chair for Research within the Orthopaedic and Rheumatologic Institute, to shepherd the extremely important academic and research mission of the Institute at-large.

Employment with Cleveland Clinic offers outstanding benefits, robust resources for professional development including leadership, education, and management tracks as well as a formal mentorship program available for faculty. Tail coverage is provided and there are no restrictive covenants.
