The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) along with The Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery within the Department of Surgery is looking to hire an exceptional academic colorectal surgeon with proven leadership skills to serve as the surgical lead for inflammatory bowel disease.  The candidate will join colorectal surgeons and gastroenterologists as part of an outstanding multidisciplinary team at the Ohio State Inflammatory Bowel Center. The position will be responsible for the oversight and supervision of surgical care, education, and research within the IBD service line at The Ohio State University Hospitals. The candidate will work in collaboration with medical, nursing, and hospital leadership to provide high-quality outcomes. This position is full-time and will be based at Ohio State University-Main Hospital and the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center outpatient clinics.  The position offers tremendous leadership opportunities, the potential for professional and programmatic development, and offers a competitive salary and benefits package.

Qualifications

  • Board Certified in General Surgery and Colon and Rectal Surgery
  • Successful completion of a colorectal surgery residency
  • Strong academic experience in basic science, translational, clinical, or health services research
  • Demonstration of leadership experience
  • Eligible for State of Ohio medical licensure
  • Qualify for academic appointment at the Associate or Professor level – Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with previous training and experience

The Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery

The Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery is led by Division Director, Dr. Matthew Kalady, and includes 8 surgeons, 5 nurse practitioners, and currently 1 colorectal surgery resident.  Rotating general surgery residents and medical students are also a crucial part of our team.  The Division concentrates efforts on clinical care, research, and education related to patients with malignant and benign diseases. The division believes the highest-quality care results from a combination of focused knowledge and a wide breadth of treatment options.  We work closely with our colleagues in other fields to provide multidisciplinary, coordinated care so that we approach each person as a whole. Our primary goal is to provide accessible, timely, and top-notch patient care. The Department of Surgery, led by Dr. Timothy Pawlik, boasts a broad array of clinical, research, and educational opportunities. The department is home to multiple R01-funded researchers, and three training grants are ranked in the Top 10 Blue Ridge Rankings for NIH funding among departments of surgery nationally and host the #6 general surgery residency program in the nation.

The Ohio State Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center is a free-standing Center, located amid Columbus’ rapidly growing western suburbs, and is one of the region’s fastest-growing and highest-volume IBD programs.  The center offers comprehensive, personalized care plans that include dietitian services, medical therapy, and surgical consultation. The IBD Program was awarded the “Golden Colon” award for the fourth time by the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. 

The Medical Center has over 1,300 patient beds, performs over 44,000 surgeries per year, and has over 1.7 million annual outpatient visits. Established in 1914, the Ohio State Department of Surgery has a long and respected tradition of excellence in clinical care, research and education. The overall Department of Surgery is composed of nine surgical specialty divisions and seven centers.
