In the past year support for basic research included $10.5 million from the Department of Veterans Affairs and $24 million from other agencies such as the National Institutes of Health. Presently there are 70 VA-funded projects and 251 active research protocols. Specialized areas of research expertise include the biology of inflammation, diabetic vascular disease, cancer, and immunology. HSR&D projects include a Center for Research Innovation and Implementation of Strategies in Practice (CRIISP) that focuses on development of best clinical practice models, and other grants that address areas such as the economic effects of guideline implementation, wound healing, and telemedicine. RR&D projects are focused on glaucoma and other visual problems.
