Scholarship Opportunity for OBGYN Residents

The Specialized Training Assistance Program (STRAP), provides you with a monthly stipend of over $2,500 throughout your residency.

As an OBGYN, the work you will do on the U.S. Army healthcare team is not only an essential service, but also life changing. You will provide medical care during pregnancy, performs obstetric deliveries, and examines diagnoses and treats or prescribes course of treatment for patients who have gynecological disease, injury or disorder. You will use your specialized skills to solve unique challenges in clinical surroundings, in patient care, and more. Scholarship Requirements

- You must have completed PGY I and successfully passed all three steps of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) exams on their first attempt.
-Applicants entering the program at the PGYIII level and above, you must have obtained a full unrestricted license within 2 years following completion of medical school or prior to program
-Must be a U.S. Citizen/ Permanent Resident
-Must have a doctor of medicine or osteopathy degree from an accredited US school of medicine or osteopathy. Foreign graduates may apply if they have a permanent certificate from the Educational Council of Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Scholarship Obligation

Under the Specialized Training Assistance Program (STRAP), your minimum reserves (part time) obligation as an Army Reserve Officer is one year for every 6 months (or partial 6 month period) of financial assistance. Acceptance is not automatic and is reviewed upon a case-by-case basis.

If I join the Army now, will be pulled out of my residency program?

No! As a resident in STRAP, you will also be assigned to the Army Medical Department Professional Management Command (APMC), a non-deploying unit, until you complete your residency. You will be required to attend drill one weekend per month with a two-week training period each year.
During your annual training period, you will be placed on active-duty (full time) status and receive pay and benefits equal to that of a captain in the U.S. Army.
