Overview

The primary purpose of the Medical Director of the Research Learning Center is to nurture, develop, and mentor our clinician scientists in partnership with academic chairs, the Children’s Mercy Research Institute leadership, and the Office of Faculty Development. This position reports directly to the Physician-in-Chief and requires a commitment of a 0.40 to 0.70 FTE based on the qualifications of the candidate, allowing for additional efforts up to a 1.0 FTE to be tailored to individual professional interests.  This leadership position requires administrative skills to guide an office crafted to provide all aspects of research support for clinician-scientists.  This support will include opportunity discovery, grant writing/editing, study design, and biostatistical support, among others.  The successful candidate will show evidence of significant research success as defined by NIH funding and experience to poise the medical director for effective mentoring of clinician-scientists at all levels of development.  This includes individual mentorship as well as organizational support of group workshops or practice sessions for scientific meetings.  Finally, this position requires the ability to work with a diverse set of faculty from multiple departments, and to be the institutional representative for our Research Learning Center to the Board of Directors and other external groups of interest.  Success in the position will be determined by faculty engagement with the Research Learning Center and the successful upward research trajectories of our clinician-scientists. The upward trajectory will be measured in large part by successful external funding applications.

Responsibilities

- Provides administrative leadership to a team of individuals inclusive of administrators, grant editors and biostatisticians focused on nurturing, developing, and mentoring our clinician scientists at all levels

-Designs and facilitates hands-on learning opportunities for groups of faculty interested in exploring research as a career path

-Creates and promotes standardization for academic work products, including presentations

-Provides mentorship to clinician scientists at all levels of career development

-Develops and Implements processes that foster robust internal grant review prior to submission to funding agencies

-Provides advice and insight to our academic chairs on the trajectory of the clinical scientists in their respective departments

-Fosters collaboration and partnership with our Office of Faculty Development and our Leadership Center for Physicians to maximize the impact of everyone’s efforts

Qualifications

  • MD or PhD required
  • Evidence of a track record of significant external funding (e.g. NIH)
  • If MD and planning to have a clinical role, State Medical License Required, BNDD and DEA Certificates Required, and BE/BC Required
