About UAMS

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences was founded in 1879 by eight physicians. Today UAMS is the state’s only academic health center, part of a statewide network of postsecondary education institutions of the University of Arkansas System governed by a 10-member Board of Trustees.

In addition to its next-generation hospital and outpatient center on the now 84-acre campus, UAMS is home to the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Health Professions, Public Health, and a graduate school. But UAMS is much more than its central campus, the university runs clinics in all 75 counties in the state, eight regional family medical centers, eight Centers on Aging, and one of the most successful Head Start Programs in the nation.

UAMS Mission Statement

The mission of UAMS is to improve the health, health care and well-being of Arkansans and of others in the region, nation and the world by:

  • Educating current and future health professionals and the public

Little Rock, AR

Little Rock is located in a beautiful part of the country. There are many state parks that are well maintained and offer ample opportunities for outdoor activities.

Little Rock thrives in “New South” culture, offering a booming nightlife, entertainment, and dining scenes. The hub of Little Rock is the bustling River Market District featuring restaurants, shops, bars, nightlife, museums and hotels as well as the area's main library. Focal points in the city include the Clinton Presidential Center & Park and the Central Arkansas Nature Center. The Clinton Presidential Park Wetlands add “green” as well, with boardwalks winding throughout the preserve in downtown Little Rock. In the vicinity you'll also find the family-friendly Museum of Discovery, which features an interactive indoor playground for young and old. A ride in the METRO Streetcar will take you through the River Market District and into North Little Rock.  Arts and culture mavens will love the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, which houses both traveling exhibitions and an exceptional permanent collection of works on paper.

The city is also home to 15 miles of scenic riverfront walking and cycling trails, along with one of the longest pedestrian and bicycle bridges in America. One highlight is that golf can be played 12 months a year. Arkansas is famous for its green timber duck hunting, bass fishing and even trout fishing on the world famous White River tail water. The Buffalo River, a pristine floatable 120-mile long protected national park is two hours from downtown Little Rock. Travel is relatively easy due to the close proximity of the Little Rock National Airport and a number of interstate highways. Memphis is 140 miles east, St. Louis is 360 miles north, Dallas is 325 miles southwest and New Orleans is 420 miles south. Moreover, the Little Rock School District has approximately 25,000 students, who are educated in 50 schools throughout the system, and is also the home of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
