About this Opportunity

The Phase I / Experimental Therapeutics Program Director in the Children’s Mercy Cancer Center (CMCC) will lead a multi-disciplinary team of professionals focusing on early phase clinical trials and new drug discovery in childhood cancer.  The Director will oversee and set the vision for clinical, research, and education development while pursuing and securing funding to support these efforts.  The Director will: maintain and expand the national Phase I consortia membership for the CMCC; mentor and support faculty and trainee participation; and  work with hospital leaders to align the vision and direction the Phase I program with that of the Section, Division, and Hospital.

The Phase I / Experimental Therapeutics Program in the Children’s Mercy Cancer Center has been enrolling patients since 2010.  Clinical trials available in the program have been a mixture of academic consortias including expanded COG Phase 1+ trials, direct Pharma-sponsored trials, and local investigator initiated trials.  CMCC’s Phase I program is closely partnered with the hospital’s Pediatric Clinical Pharmacology program, one of the largest in the country.  The program has had 3 Hematology/Oncology faculty closely involved in the program’s trial and patient oversight and this is anticipated to grow.  The Phase I program is well supported with a dedicated Advanced Nurse Practitioner and 4 clinical research coordinators.  In addition to the Clinical Pharmacology core laboratories, the Phase I program has direct access as a full NCI-designated Cancer Center consortium member with the University of Kansas Cancer Center’s Phase I program and its nationally recognized drug discovery program located just a few miles away in Kansas City, KS, and as well the KU School of Pharmacy on the nearby Lawrence, KS campus.  CMH faculty are embedded in numerous labs within the KU Cancer Center.  Faculty appointments will include membership within the KU Cancer Center.
