Care for Our Veterans at NJ VA Healthcare System

The Spinal Cord Injury & Disorders (SCI/D) Service of the VA New Jersey Healthcare System (VANJHCS) in East Orange, NJ is recruiting a physician (MD or DO) who has experience with caring for patients with spinal cord injury or disorders, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Multiple Sclerosis or trained in Spinal Cord Medicine (Board Eligible or Certified in Spinal Cord Medicine preferred).

The East Orange SCI/D Center is a well-established program dedicated to providing chronic life-long comprehensive care to Veterans with SCI/D and serves as a VA referral hub for a catchment area including all of NJ and Eastern PA. The VANJHCS has an affiliation with Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. The position involves the day-to-day medical care of persons with SCI and disorders in both inpatient and outpatient settings, inclusive of both traumatic and non-traumatic SCI, multiple sclerosis, and ALS. It also includes the supervision of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School students, residents, and fellows. Applicants must possess a current and unrestricted license in any State, have excellent diagnostic and interpersonal skills, a commitment to team building, and have the overall aptitude for leadership, educational development, and research.

Additionally, the physician will work closely with our team of dedicated healthcare professionals to assure compliance with rational, regional, and local VA performance standards, and may serve on local committees as deemed necessary in support of the facility's mission.

Preferred Experience: Physician (MD or DO) trained in Spinal Cord Medicine (Board Eligible or Certified in Spinal Cord Medicine preferred) or who has experience with caring for patients with spinal cord injury or disorders or who has experience working in acute or sub-acute rehabilitation settings.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4: 30pm work schedule, as well as, participation in a rotating schedule providing On-Call coverage to the SCI/D Department's inpatient unit (and supervision to the on-call resident).

Key Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Board Eligible or Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehab, Physiatry (ABPMR) highly preferred
  • Holds a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in ANY U.S. State

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
