The Chief or Director, P&LMS serves as an active member of the medical staff, directing and coordinating the patient care, administration, education, and research functions of P&LMS. The Chief or Director, P&LMS, need not perform all responsibilities personally. Selected functions may be delegated to qualified pathologists, medical laboratory scientists, laboratory managers, and supervisors. Medical care responsibilities may only be delegated to physicians. Technical responsibilities may be delegated to qualified laboratory personnel, as appropriate. The Chief or Director,

P&LMS, however, remains responsible for the overall operation and administration of the laboratory, ensuring that quality patient services are provided and that personnel operations and laboratory management are run efficiently and effectively.

Additional Requirements:

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in a related specialty - Pathology

Preferred Criteria:

  • Possess experience working and managing a Pathology Laboratory.

Work Schedule: 8:00am - 4:30pm; Monday - Friday
Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)

Facility and Location

The Reno campus operates 64 hospital beds, 60 Community Living Center beds, 14 ED beds, 12 ICU beds and 14 inpatient psych beds, in addition to four Community Based Outpatient Clinics and one rural outreach clinic. Academic affiliations for VASNHCS are the University Of Nevada School Of Medicine and the East Bay Surgical Program at the University of California, San Francisco. Approximately 45 medical, surgical, and psychiatry residents rotate annually through VASNHCS. Reno VA has 4 surgical suites in addition to cystoscopy and urology anesthesia suites. Approximately 50-55 cases per week are performed in orthopedics, general, ENT, urology, vascular, thoracic and GYN surgical specialties/subspecialties.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
