Basic Qualifications:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, (copy of ECFMG certificate must be provided).
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Current, Full Unrestricted License to practice medicine.
  • Board Eligible or Board-Certified in Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine or Internal Medicine physicians.
  • 2 years of experience working in an Emergency Department preferred.

Duties:

  • The physician working in ED must determine if a patient s symptoms may be caused by a serious medical condition. If a patient presents to the emergency department in distress, the emergency physician may be expected to do any of the following:
  • Evaluation and treatment of the following body systems: skin, eye, ear, nose, throat, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urologic, reproductive, nervous, endocrine, musculoskeletal and hematology of patients in the Emergency Room.
  • Perform invasive and non-invasive procedures in ED patients, based on the ED guidelines, such as emergency resuscitation, placing intravenous line etc.
  • Initial and ongoing assessment of patients' medical, physical, and psychosocial status.
  • Obtain and document a comprehensive medical and psychological history and physical examination. Order appropriate diagnostic tests and interpret laboratory, studies and take appropriate action.
  • Taking whatever steps are necessary to stabilize the patient for transport to another area of the hospital or transport to another hospital.
  • Determining if patients need to be admitted to the hospital for further evaluation.
  • Discharging some patients with instructions for self-treatment and follow-up with their personal care       physician for additional evaluation on an outpatient basis
  •  Provide medical advice to patients, families, and community health providers by telephone.
  •  Document patient care in the electronic health record within the prescribed time limits.
  •  Attends Medical Center and community meetings, seminars, conferences.
  •  Follow processes established by the Chief of ED, guidelines, MCM, Metrics and policies of VHA and facility.
  •  Have the capacity to work in a teamwork environment where the priority will be to follow the VHA cores    of integrity, commitment, advocacy respect and excellence.
  •   Other duties as assigned.

      Work Schedule: Rotating schedule of 8 hours shifts /7 days / 24 hours to complete 80 hours per PP                 (every 2 weeks).

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
