Clinical/Pediatric Psychologist for Heart Center Thrive Program

The Division of Developmental and Behavioral Health and the Ward Family Heart Center at Children’s Mercy Kansas City are seeking a psychologist to provide psychological  services to our diverse cardiology population. The Thrive Program is an interdisciplinary program designed to support our heart center patients, families and staff.

We are developing an innovative integrated cardiac well-being program which will merge our existing Cardiac Neurodevelopmental (CND) program with our psychosocial services program (Thrive) to advance a model of comprehensive developmental and psychosocial care within the Ward Family Heart Center. This program includes pediatric psychology, pediatric neuropsychology, social work, palliative care, nutrition, PT/OT, speech/language pathology, and other allied healthcare providers. We are currently expanding the psychology services in this program through both pediatric psychology and neurodevelopmental psychology.

The Thrive Program currently has one pediatric psychologist who serves as the director of the Thrive Program and provides both inpatient and outpatient psychological services.  This new position will involve primarily outpatient services to patients with congenital and acquired heart conditions through outpatient therapy, targeted assessment, and brief consultation in interdisciplinary clinics. Specific clinic involvement is open, although multiple multidisciplinary clinics exist [e.g. Preventive cardiology, Muscle Nerve clinic, Fontan follow-up, Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD)].

The ideal candidate will be a psychologist with broad training in pediatric psychology, health psychology and/or related fields in clinical child psychology.  Strong therapy skills with a wide variety of ages and presenting emotional and behavioral concerns is preferred. The position will include teaching and supervising in the hospital’s pediatric medical and psychology training programs, including our APA-accredited psychology internship and cardiology fellowship, and include protected academic time for program development, service, research, and other scholarly activities.  Faculty mentoring is available for those interested in clinical scholarship (e.g., program evaluation, quality improvement initiatives).  This position carries an academic appointment at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, with rank commensurate to qualifications and experience.

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in clinical psychology, pediatric psychology, or clinical child psychology
  • Completed an internship at an APA-accredited internship program with a focus on child psychology
  • Relevant experience
  • Eligibility for licensure in Missouri and Kansas

The Division of Developmental and Behavioral Health at Children’s Mercy is growing and expanding programs as part of the institution’s Mental and Behavioral Health Strategic Plan.  We offer a dynamic and collegial work environment that includes 52 psychologists, 7 developmental pediatricians, 10 child and adolescent psychiatrists, master’s and doctoral level board certified behavior analysts, and other allied health professionals who work together to provide outstanding mental and behavioral health care to youth in our region and beyond.  This position includes a competitive salary and benefits package.  Candidates at all levels of experience will be considered. Bilingual candidates are especially encouraged to apply.
