Salem Veteran Affairs (VA) Medical Center is seeking a Hematologist/Oncologist to join our exemplary team of medical professionals providing superior care to our country’s veterans!

This position is located in the Medical Care Service Line at the Salem VA Medical Center and reports directly to the Chief of Medicine. The physician provides consultation services and follow-up of medical subspecialty patients, in the inpatient and/or outpatient setting. The incumbent should have strong interpersonal skills to establish professional working relationships with other clinicians and staff throughout the facility and the Community Based Outpatient Clinics.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

The Salem VA Health Care System (HCS) is in the City of Salem, Virginia, and serves Veterans throughout the state. This Level 1c tertiary referral center is a teaching hospital providing a variety of patient care services with a full range of medical sub-specialties, including a full time ED, Urgent care, Cath lab, Endoscopy Suite, and Interventional Pain Service. Authorized beds include: 182 general medical, surgical, and psychiatry; 90 Extended Care Rehabilitation Center (with a 10 bed Short Stay Rehabilitation Center); 26 Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (10 long term Substance Abuse).

As a teaching hospital, Salem VA Medical Center provides a full range of educational experiences, with a state-of-the-art Simulation Learning Center and a cooperative research service supporting Educational, Population, Clinical, and Basic Science research. Our medical center has 3 active medical school affiliations with the University of Virginia School of Medicine, the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Virginia Tech Carillon School of Medicine, in addition to several smaller affiliations. We also play a major role in training nursing students through our affiliations with the University of Virginia, Radford University, Liberty University, Jefferson College of Health Sciences, Kaplan University,  and Old Dominion University.  Finally, we offer residency training in many major medical, mental health, and subspecialties. We also provide associated health training in psychology, optometry, social work, dietetics, and pharmacy. Overall, we have more than 80 affiliations with colleges and universities.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
