The Anesthesia Department of James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital is seeking an Anesthesiologist to join our dynamic team.

The VA Tampa Healthcare System is actively recruiting a Board Certified or Board Eligible physician in Anesthesiology to help care for our Veterans – America’s Heroes.

Practice Highlights: The Anesthesiology Department consist of the following 64 staff, (14 Anesthesiologists, 39 Nurse Anesthetist, 7 Medical Instrument Technicians, 1 Physician Assistant (PA) and an Administrative Officer.  The Anesthesia Department provide a wide variety of services wish include covering Open Hearts, Lungs, Neurosurgery, Open and endovascular cases, general surgery, Bariatric and Robotic cases, Orthopedic, Urology, Plastic, Podiatry, Gynecology, Ophthalmology, GI, EP, Radiology procedures, ECTs. We provide a wide spectrum of regional procedures and run a pre-op evaluation service which includes one Attending and one PA. We are recruiting a team player and hard working Anesthesiologist that has a passion for Medicine and Anesthesia that is in line with the VA mission (Fulfilling President Lincoln’s promise to care for those who have served in our nation’s military and for their families, caregivers, and survivors), and values of (Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence — better known as “I CARE”). 

Duties and responsibilities include, but is not limited to: 

  • Assessment of, consultation for, and preparation of patients for anesthesia.
  • Management of procedures for rendering a patient unconscious or insensible to pain and emotional stress during surgical, obstetric, and certain other diagnostic or therapeutic, medical, or dental procedures.
  • Monitoring and restoration of homeostasis during the peri-operative period, as well as homeostasis in the critically ill, injured, or otherwise seriously ill patient.
  • Clinical management of various fluid, electrolyte, and metabolic disturbances.
  • Diagnosis and management of problems in pain relief.
  • Evaluation of respiratory function and application of respiratory therapy in all its forms.
  • Supervision, teaching, and evaluation of performance of both medical and paramedical personnel in anesthesia, respiratory, and critical care.
  • Conduct of research and collaboration in research efforts at the clinical and basic science level to proactively identify gaps in evidence and practice, then measure the impact of filling these gaps and linking evidence to practice. Relevant research findings and quality improvement results can then be systematically fed back to providers and patients, as appropriate.

  • Peripheral and central vascular cannulation
  • Pulmonary artery catheter placement
  • Fiberoptic bronchoscopy
  • Insertion of arterial lines
  • Tracheal intubation using routine and advanced airway management techniques
  • Respiratory mechanical support
  • Acute respiratory care
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Insertion of esophageal instruments
  • Spinal and epidural narcotic administration
  • Acute and chronic pain management using local anesthetics, steroids, narcotics, and related medications, administered by central neuraxial or peripheral nerve block, with or without indwelling catheters, with or without external delivery system.

Preferred Experience: General Anesthesia experience with regional skills.

Work Schedule: Compressed (4 days), Monday-Friday 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, (Note: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor. The incumbent may be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on facility/patient care needs. This also includes participation in On-Call coverage for evenings, weekends and holidays).

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
