Mercy Medical Center Redding (MMCR) is a Level 2 Trauma Center that serves 20% of the land mass of California. We get patients flown in from the coast (Eureka, Fortuna, Crescent City) and the Oregon and Nevada borders. MMCR is an excellent full-service community hospital with a dedicated medical staff and great back-up — we have nearly every service available except PICU, Plastic Surgery, and burn. We have 24-hour OB coverage and a Level III NICU, along with 24-hour in-house critical care and Vituity Hospitalists and Vituity Anesthesiologists. It is a challenging and busy hospital with fairly high acuity, plenty of action and chances to use your skills, and a beautiful 28 bed department with 2 additional trauma beds, with windows looking at Mt. Shasta. We currently staff 54 hours/day of physician coverage and 27 hours/day of PA/NP coverage and have a dedicated PA/NP in RME (triage/front end), with Physician in Triage about 20 hours/day. We see about 58,000 patients/year. The hospital and nearby community health clinic both have family medicine residencies that send residents through our department, and all of us have volunteer faculty appointments through UC Davis and enjoy teaching them. St. Elizabeth Community Hospital (SECH) is located in Red Bluff, CA, about 30 miles south of Redding, and is a busy small community hospital seeing about 30,000 patients/year. It is a Level 3 Trauma Center with an inpatient hospitalist service and good pediatric, OB, orthopedic, and surgical backup. Anything that can’t be handled at SECH is usually easily and smoothly transferred to MMCR. Although the acuity is generally lower than at MMCR, it is a fast-moving and fun department to work in with an excellent dedicated staff, many of whom have been there for 10+ years. It is a close knit ED with an excellent esprit de corps. Vituity is a national health care organization. Physician-owned and operated. Providing specialty services in Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, Hospital Medicine, Neurology, Outpatient Care, Psychiatry, and Telehealth. Each location Vituity provides services operates as its own entity and has the ability to make decisions that are best for that particular group. All Physicians are treated and paid as an equal partner regardless of the time with the group.
In Redding, CA the Emergency Medicine team is covering 2 local hospitals with 20 Emergency Physicians, 10 Physician Assistants, and 3 Nurse Practitioners. Mercy Redding has a 30 bed ER and St. Elizabeth’s has a 16 bed ER. This allows the team to keep their skills current with higher and lower acuity patients in the ER. An incoming physician will ideally work 100% Nocturnist shifts. Typically, the hours will be 10pm – 7am. These times may vary slightly. We are open to entertaining candidates who are open to rotate day and night shifts.
The schedule is flexible on which shifts a physician is looking to work with a few changes from time to time and after approval from Dr. Hartt. This is only to ensure all shifts are covered at both hospitals and minimal time alone in the ER. At Mercy the only solo coverage is 4:00-5:30 am. At St. E’s, the physician is solo cover 1:30am – 6:30 am. To be a full time, all physicians will work 125 hours per month, equaling 1500 hours per year.
A call schedule is in place for true emergencies. Each partner will take 1-2 days of call per month. They are rarely called into the hospital. (only 2-3 call-ins per year for the whole group)
MUST be Board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (or AOBEM) or within 5 years of completing training and scheduled to sit for the boards (aka Board Eligible). California State Medical license or able to obtain.
