System Chief of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
Hartford HealthCare Medical Group

Hartford HealthCare (HHC), the largest health care system in Connecticut, with seven acute care hospitals, including Hartford Hospital, an 867-bed, tertiary academic medical center, is seeking a highly skilled Physiatrist with leadership experience to serve as System Chief of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. This position is responsible for overseeing the clinical, academic, research and administrative operations of the Division of Physical Medicine system wide. The System Chief provides strategic direction, managing staff, ensuring high-quality patient care, and driving clinical and educational initiatives within the specialty of Physical Medicine. 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Clinical Leadership:
    • Provide expert care, including consultation, diagnosis, and treatment of function disorders.
    • Oversee and ensure the quality of inpatient and ambulatory clinical services delivered by the department.
    • Continue to develop an inpatient Physical Medicine service alongside the Physical medicine Medical director of inpatient services including recruitment and training of staff, establishing protocols and procedures.
    • Establish and maintain clinical protocols, guidelines, and standards to ensure best practices and evidence-based care.
    • Engage in direct patient care, acting as a clinical role model for other staff.
    • Partner, as the Medical Director of the Rehabilitation Network, to guide rehabilitation polices/procedures/education. 
  2. Administrative Management:
    • Develop and implement the strategic goals and objectives for the department in alignment with the organization’s mission.
    • Oversee budgeting, financial planning, and resource allocation for the department alongside practice administrator/director.
    • Supervise and evaluate the performance of Physical Medicine physicians and advanced practitioners.
    • Manage departmental workflow, schedules, and staffing to ensure efficient and effective service delivery alongside practice administrator/director.
  3. Academic and Research Leadership:
    • Provide oversight of the Physical Medicine Residency program alongside Residency Program Director and Associate Program Director, and collaborate with the faculty at the University of Connecticut.
    • Promote and support research activities within the department, fostering a culture of scientific inquiry and innovation.
    • Encourage and facilitate participation in clinical trials, research projects, and publications.
    • Lead educational initiatives for medical students, residents, fellows, and staff, providing mentorship and teaching opportunities alongside Physical Medicine residency program director and Associate program director.
    • Collaborate with academic institutions to develop training programs and foster partnerships.
  1. Quality Improvement:
    • Monitor and evaluate patient care services and outcomes, implementing quality improvement initiatives.
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and accreditation requirements.
    • Lead efforts to implement new technologies, treatments, and best practices within Physical Medicine.
  2. Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with other departments, specialties, institutes and regional hospital leadership to improve interdisciplinary care and patient outcomes.
    • Represent the Physical Medicine division in medical group hospital committees, meetings, and external forums.
    • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and positive work environment that encourages teamwork and professional growth.
  3. Patient Advocacy:
    • Advocate for patient needs and access to Physical Medicine services.
    • Address patient concerns and ensure high standards of patient satisfaction and safety.

Qualifications:

  • Education: MD or DO degree with board certification in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
  • Experience:
    • At least 5+ years of experience practicing as a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Physician, with a minimum of 3-5 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Skills:
    • Strong leadership and management skills.
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational abilities.
    • Experience in research, clinical trials, or academic teaching is highly desirable.
  • Licensure: Valid and unrestricted medical license to practice in CT.
