Chief of Cardiology Opportunity at the Zablocki VA Medical Center (ZAVAMC) with dual appointment at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) located in Milwaukee, WI

The Cardiology Section at ZAVAMC is an exciting and growing section comprised of approximately 20 full and part time Cardiologists and 6 Advanced Practice Providers. The secton boasts tertiary care for complex cardiovascular problems including high risk PCI, complex electrophysiology procedures (Afib, VT ablation), valvular disease (structural), advanced heart failure referral, and advanced imaging (cardiac MR, coronary CT, structural imaging).  Recent areas of emphasis include Cardio-oncology, Women’s Cardiovascular Health, and Cardiology telemedicine.  Our section works closely with Cardiothoracic Surgery and Radiology. Responsibilities for the Chief of Cardiology at ZAVAMC include the oversight and operations of all inpatient, outpatient, and procedural areas specific to Cardiovascular Care. This includes recruitment and management of all clinical physicians and providers, program development, quality improvement, patient advocacy, research programs, maintenance of telemedicine programs, and outreach to community based outpatient clinics and hospitals within VISN 12.  It is expected the section chief will have a significant clinical presence.

The ZAVAMC is a Level 1A inpatient facility within the VA Milwaukee Healthcare System, a network of outpatient primary care and multi-specialty clinics.  The Medical Center provides additional tele-medicine services to outpatient clinics from Southern Illinois to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

  • The Chief of Cardiology at ZAVAMC will acquire dual appointment as faculty with the Medical College of Wisconsin.  This VA is one of the main teaching centers in Wisconsin, therefore fellowship & residency supervision and educational duties for medical students is an expectation. Qualified applicants should be eligible for faculty appointment at MCW, and will participate in supervisory roles in fellowship & residency programs.
  • Board certification in Cardiovascular Medicine

The Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center is located on 245 acres on the western edge of Milwaukee and part of VA Integrated Services Network 12 (VISN 12), which includes facilities in Iron Mountain, Michigan; Tomah and Madison, Wisconsin, and North Chicago, Hines, and Chicago in Illinois. The Medical Center delivers primary, secondary, and tertiary medical care in 196 hospital beds, and provides more than 857,000 visits annually through an extensive outpatient program. The nursing home care unit of 113 beds offers geriatric programming and the 150 domiciliary beds are the focus of programs in Substance Abuse Rehabilitation, Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder care.

In an effort to improve access to veterans in Milwaukee County, the VAMC has deployed a mobile clinic that provides primary care four days a week to veterans. The Medical Center also assists the Vet Center located in the City of Milwaukee. In addition, this Medical Center participates in a four-way partnership with the WDVA, the Center for Veterans Issues, Ltd., and the Social Development Commission, to operate Vets Place Central, a 72-bed transitional housing program. Milwaukee also has community clinics in Appleton, Cleveland, Green Bay, and Union Grove, Wisconsin. These programs serve a veteran population of 234,953 in southeastern and east central Wisconsin.

Special programs include interventional radiology, cardiac surgery, comprehensive cancer care including radiation therapy, an extensive telemedicine program with the Iron Mountain, MI VAMC, a Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and, in long term care, a Geriatric Evaluation and Management Program and a palliative care program.

The Medical Center is the VA Great Lakes Health Care System's northern tier hub for both imaging, and pathology/ laboratory medicine.
