Hematologist/Oncologist

Hampton has a rich and extensive 20th-century military history - home of Langley Air Force Base, the nation's first military installation dedicated solely to air power and the home of the U.S. Air Force's 633rd Air Base Wing and 1st and 192nd Fighter Wings. Hampton has been a center of military aviation training, research, and development for nearly a hundred years, from early prop planes and Zeppelins to rocket parts and advanced fighters. The staff Hematologist/Oncologist will be responsible for, but not limited to the following duties.

• Provide expert consultation and treatment to patients in the outpatient Hematology/Oncology clinic; as well as provide feedback and consultation with the other services within the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center.
• The Physician will evaluate, triage, and prioritize requests from Primary Care providers and others for outpatient hematology/oncology subspecialty consultations.
• They will obtain medical histories, conduct physical examinations, order, and evaluate appropriate laboratory testing, and plan and prescribe treatment for patients.
• The Hematologist/Oncologist will coordinate medical management and care with Primary Care providers and other medical personnel in a multidisciplinary health care delivery system.
• The Hematologist/Oncologist will perform administrative tasks as assigned, such as peer reviews and Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluations (OPPE).
• Provide Hematology/Oncology on-call services as assigned.

Research and development

We conduct research to discover knowledge, develop VA scientists and health care leaders, and create innovations that advance health care for Veterans and the nation. • Million Veteran Program (MVP) - a national research program to learn how genes, lifestyle, and military exposures affect health and illness.

• PTSD with art therapy
• Carpel tunnel treatment methods

Teaching and learning

As a teaching hospital, Hampton VA Medical Center provides a full range of services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research. Our medical center is primarily affiliated with the Eastern Virginia Medical School. We offer residency training in all major medical, mental health and subspecialties. We also provide associated health training in nursing, psychology, optometry, social work, dietetics, and pharmacy.

Federal Retirement Plan:

• VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
• How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
• Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
• The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
• For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
• In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
• Disability Retirement
• Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
