Job Description

Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) and Indiana University Health Physicians are actively seeking a highly qualified surgeon with fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care or Acute Care Surgery. The candidate must be board certified/eligible in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work within an extraordinary, high-acuity ACS team at Eskenazi Health

Institutional Highlights:
Trauma Service: Over 1600 trauma admissions annually are admitted to Smith Level I Shock Trauma Center at Eskenazi Hospital, American College of Surgeons verified. In 2023, our team evaluated more than 975 trauma activations of critically injured patients with approximately 80% blunt trauma, 20% penetrating trauma. Eskenazi Health is a very busy Level 1 Trauma Center with more than 100,000 ED visits annually. The trauma program has a mature injury prevention program.  Eskenazi Hospital is also the regional burn center with a dedicated burn service and ICU, separate from the trauma service. 

Position Summary:

Emergency/General Surgery Service: The General Surgery service provides comprehensive care of patients with both acute and elective surgical conditions. In addition to EGS, members of the division evaluate and manage general surgery patients referred to the division. 

Critical Care: The hospital has 36 ICU beds of which 12 are dedicated SICU beds. 

IU Health Physicians: This multispecialty group formed in partnership with Indiana University will be the employer for the new acute care surgeons. 

Education: The Department of Surgery will have 11 residents per year starting in 2025. In addition, there are 3 surgical critical care fellowships and 1 AAST approved 2-year ACS fellowship positions.

Research: Robust support for clinical, translational, health sciences and basic science research is available.
Responsibilities:

  • Provide Acute Care Surgery services (trauma, emergency and general surgery, and surgical critical care) in various settings including the ED, OR, ICU, floor, and clinic.
  • Engage in teaching and mentoring students, residents and fellows in all aspects of acute care surgery
  • Participate in clinical research opportunities within one of the largest medical schools in the country.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality patient care.
  • Provide education and outreach to our community partners including EMS, law enforcement and referring hospitals.

Compensation: Salary and academic/clinical rank will be commensurate with experience. Generous CME allowance, research and professional support is provided
