Section Chief Primary Care Pain Management opportunity at the Bay Pines VA

The department of Primary Care at the Bay Pines VA is seeking a full time BC experienced Physician to join our growing practice and fulfill the role of Primary Care Pain medicine Section Chief.

Section Chief Primary Care Pain Management will take ownership of the coordination of pain management activities for the facility including but not limited to:

  • Implement a plan of action for educating staff on pain related topics including MAT for opioid addiction
  • Maintain a DEA x-waiver and provide MAT induction and treatment in the outpatient setting for patients who are psychologically stable and do not have comorbid substance use disorders.
  • Approximately 70% of time will be face to face patient care. 30% administrative
  • Primary focus of clinical practice is the independent clinical evaluation of Pain Management of Veterans through their panel of patients including prevention and patient self-management.
  • Is responsible for referral to management of clinical concerns that are found during these evaluations.
  • Collaborating with clinical and administrative support to provide timely, quality, coordinated care for Veterans.
  • Works in conjunction with the other medical facility departments and staff on projects pertaining to the delivery of comprehensive Pain Management.
  • Provides leadership in the operations Bay Pines VAMC Pain Management, including staff training, education, scheduling, panel management, and coordination of care within the multi-disciplinary health teams.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates Quality Improvement activities relating to Pain Management.
  • Coordinates educational programs and disseminates information on educational offerings for Pain Management
  • Coordinates education of clinical staff, including but not limited to physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, RNs, LPN, PharmD and health care technicians in the theory, practice and implementation of comprehensive health care for women across all CWBY Bay Pines VA primary care sites.
  • May supervise Internal Medicine Residents, medical students, or mid-levels in training.
  • Create and maintain local policies for the management of non-cancer pain.
  • Function as the Pain Champion, Multidisciplinary Pain Subcommittee Chair and Pain POC for the facility.
  • Function as the collaborating physician for the inpatient and outpatient pain PharmDs coordinating pain management for inpatient and post-operative patients.
  • Provide consultation services to address opioid addiction issues for patients who do not have comorbid substance abuse or active mental health issues.
  • Provide direct oversite for "Pain School" including coordinating with pharmacy, nutrition, mental health, PMR and whole health to create an updated program


Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
