Job Summary

Geisinger Pediatrics is seeking a Vice Chair for the Department of Pediatrics, Outpatient General Pediatric Services. The position will provide oversight of the Department’s extensive outpatient general pediatric network. The Vice Chair works closely with the Chair of Pediatrics, Regional General Pediatric Directors, General Pediatrics Operation Director and Managers, and the Women and Children Institute Administration to ensure the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered, and evidence-based care to children and families. The Vice Chair of Outpatient Pediatrics will guide the management of the central, northeast, western and southcentral outpatient general pediatric services. The Vice Chair will work to foster a culture of excellence, innovation, and collaboration across outpatient pediatric clinics and within the Geisinger system. The Vice Chair of Outpatient Pediatrics will clearly articulate and demonstrate the Department of Pediatrics’ Values and Purpose to our outpatient faculty and staff. The ideal candidate will have a deep commitment to patient care, learner education and experience, and quality improvement. The successful candidate will promote a strong culture of respect, professionalism, institutional stewardship, child advocacy and community engagement. The position will be afforded 0.33 FTE for administrative responsibilities. Additional protected time is available if the candidate has established or develops successful research.

Responsibilities

The Vice Chair for Outpatient Pediatrics responsibilities include:

  • Provide leadership to the outpatient practices by being accountable for the overall success and effectiveness of the practices.

  • Develops and implements initiatives in General Pediatrics utilizing multidisciplinary teams to create an appropriate patient safety culture using transparency, staff engagement, and collaboration and accountability as foundations for this culture.

  • Assume General Pediatric clinical responsibilities consistent with appointment in the appropriate clinical practice site.

  • Provide exceptional clinical care that is reflected in measures of quality, peer review, and patient satisfaction.

  • Promote a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion within General Pediatrics.

  • Promote professionalism, kindness and patient-centeredness as championed by Geisinger’s Social Compact.

  • Establish practice standards, which include appropriate development and implementation of clinical practice guidelines, performance standards and policies.

  • Work with Pediatric Quality leaders to advance our outpatient quality program that evaluates and responds to key quality measures including patient experience results, Outpatient Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS), internal quality data such as the Quality Disease Management Dashboard (QDMD) and Geisinger Health Plan Quality indicators.

  • Support a just culture where the focus is on addressing systems issues that contribute to errors and harm.

  • Collaborating closely with the Outpatient Advanced Practice Chief, including assisting in recruitment, retention, education and promoting close collaboration between the APs and Pediatricians.

  • Advance our academic mission working closely with GCSOM and GME to provide an exemplary teaching environment for our residents and medical students.

  • Pursue scholarly activities through clinical research including participation in clinical research and quality improvement projects.

  • Share responsibility with Pediatric Operation Managers for the planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating operations, including managing patient volumes, provider templates and the annual budget.

  • Participate in community focused initiatives that advance the prevention of childhood illness and injury and promote advocacies for all children.

  • Establish clinical priorities for recruiting and retaining outpatient pediatric providers and staff capable of providing the best practice.

  • Participate in faculty meetings, and committees as assigned (Outpatient Regional Meetings, Pediatric Department Meeting, Physician Leadership Forum).

  • Assist in the oversight, growth, and development of CME programs such as the Pediatric Annual Update and the quarterly newsletter for the Department of Pediatrics.

  • Participate in faculty development and act as a mentor to future leaders.

  • Manage the resolution of practice related problems in collaboration with regional leaders and provide oversight of peer review processes.

  • Act as a liaison to outpatient subspecialties, emergency medicine and hospital-based specialties.


Position Details

Qualifications

  • M.D. or D.O. degree with board certification in Pediatrics and an unrestricted Pennsylvania state medical license

  • Five years of leadership experience preferred (i.e., site leader, regional director)

  • Recognition by peers within his/her discipline as a developing or established leader with superior clinical skills

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication skills for both clinical and non-clinical audiences.

  • An outstanding record of effectively leading and developing people; a strong team orientation along with a history of working cooperatively and collegially.

  • Personal characteristics of integrity, maturity, and honesty, as well as a genuine commitment to the future of Pediatrics at Geisinger

  • Have experience with scalable, sustainable systems approaches to pediatric care delivery across a broad geographical area.

  • Have a strong interest in forming community and agency partnerships to improve community pediatric health.

  • Have knowledge of integrated and collaborative care models, and experience with diverse payment and reimbursement mechanisms

Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine- (Required)
