Fast Growing NC VA Healthcare System

We are seeking a full-time, board certified Internal Medicine or Family Practice physicians for this primary care position in Ambulatory Care. He/she will deliver services to veterans presenting for health care. Physician will provide day-to-day care of veteran patients presenting with ambulatory/primary care appointments

He/she functions as an independent physician who is highly skilled in the management/treatment of a patient's primary care needs, including preventive, chronic and urgent care. The physician will operate as a member of the team practice model which has been developed at each facility with each patient identified and placed with a primary care provider and on an outpatient team

As with other primary care providers, the core functions include diagnosing and treating acute and chronic health care problems, performing routine check-ups and prescribing medication and treatments

We have opportunities to work with special populations including Geriatrics, OEF/OIF, Spinal Cord injury and Wound care. We have opportunities to teach residents, medical students, nurse practitioners and nurse practitioner students. Please bring your special interest and unique talents.

Work Hours: Generally, Monday – Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.

Licensure and Registration. Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Education. Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

Physical Standards/Requirements: All applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the duties of the position

English Language Proficiency. Applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English as required.

The Fayetteville NC VA Coastal Health Care provides health care services to approximately 80,000 Veterans in a 19-county area of southeastern North Carolina. Our facilities include the Fayetteville VA Medical Center, two health care centers—one in Fayetteville and one in Wilmington, 9 outpatient clinics.

The VA Fayetteville Coastal Healthcare System is an innovative care center within the Veterans Integrated Service Network 6 (VISN 6). VISN 6 includes medical centers in Asheville, Durham, Fayetteville, and Salisbury in North Carolina; and Hampton, Richmond, and Salem in Virginia; and 38 outpatient clinics in North Carolina and Virginia.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service

About Fayetteville, NC

Fayetteville’s growth during the last fifty years has produced an ambivalent response.  During the 1960s, Fayetteville’s main street, Hay Street, with it strip joints and bars that catered to the military, was considered sleazy, and with the Vietnam War in full swing, the city was derogatorily called “Fayttenam.”  By the 1980s, Hay Street had been revitalized, but it has not yet rebounded to surpass the sales of the suburban strip malls and shopping centers.  Today, over one hundred subdivisions, including King’s Grant, Tallywood, Vanstory Hills, and numerous shopping plazas and malls dot the map of Fayetteville.  Some of the first retailing complexes were Eutaw Shopping Center, constructed on Bragg Boulevard in 1948, Boudreaux Shopping Center, built on a former vineyard in the 1950s, and the Westwood Shopping Center, erected in the 1960s.   The large and indoor Cross Creek Mall opened in 1976.  In all, the city’s retail sales have skyrocketed during the post-war years: $44 million in 1948, a half billion in 1972, and one billion in 1982.The increase in sales reveals the constant population growth of the city.  In 1930 Fayetteville’s population was 13,309.  By 1940 the population grew to 17,428, (forty-percent African American). Population growth also resulted from the city expanding its boundaries; after the post-World War II suburban sprawl, city leaders decided to annex over a hundred subdivisions.  In 1980, Fayetteville residents numbered 60,000 and their number more than doubled to 121,015 by 2005 and comprised North Carolina’s sixth largest city.


In addition to its service industry and military bases and growing population, Fayetteville is known for its institutions of higher education.  Founded in 1867 to educate freed slaves, Fayetteville State University, has a current enrollment slightly surpassing 5,000 and offers numerous graduate programs.  Methodist College, a four–year liberal arts college established in 1960, educates approximately 2,000 students.  Fayetteville Technical Community College opened its doors in 1960 and now has over 7,000 full and part-time students.

Fayetteville is also known for its cultural arts.  Following World War II, the city formed the Fayetteville Symphony in 1957, and the Fayetteville Little Symphony in 1962.  The Fayetteville Museum of Art was established in 1972.  Fayetteville can boast of several radio stations, two television stations, and the Fayetteville Observer, founded in 1835 and the state’s oldest operating periodical.  Fayetteville is also home to the Cape Fear Museum of History and the recently opened Airborne and Special Operations Museum in downtown Fayetteville.
