The Orlando Veterans Affairs Health Care System is recruiting a Chief of Cardiology

The Orlando Veterans Affairs Health Care System is recruiting a Chief of Cardiology to lead a vibrant and diverse department providing a broad range of cardiology services to our nation’s Veterans. Experience in Clinical Leadership is highly preferred for this position. 

The Cardiology Section Chief is responsible for clinical and supervisory oversight of physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and other staff, including recruitment, recommending, and supervising clinical privileges, and staff development.  Operational responsibilities include oversight of Cardiology clinics, the Inpatient consultation service, Interventional, Electrophysiology and Non-Invasive Cardiology Diagnostic services as well as Clinical Access and Community Care.

The Cardiology Section Chief is expected to actively practice in their specialty.  Departmental clinical efforts include outpatient Cardiology clinics, inpatient/ICU consultation and teaching rounds, interpretation of diagnostic studies such as trans-thoracic and trans-esophageal echocardiograms, event monitors, stress tests, and ECGs in addition to interventional and electrophysiology cardiac catheterization labs.

Orlando Veterans Affairs Health Care System is affiliated with multiple academic affiliates and an academic appointment at one or both of our locally affiliated Medical Schools is strongly encouraged.  Cardiologists actively participate in teaching including Medical Students, Internal Medicine Residents, and Cardiology Fellows.  Incumbent is expected to support and expand Academic pursuits including teaching affiliates and/or department research.

Unrestricted medical licensure in any state is required for employment.  Board Certification or Eligibility in Cardiology is strongly preferred. Echocardiography board certification is strongly preferred.

A typical tour of duty is Monday through Friday 0800-1630 with inpatient service/on call duties generally every 8-10 weeks.  Outpatient and non-invasive study interpretation duties are not scheduled during inpatient rotation.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service

About the Orlando VA Medical Center

The Orlando VA Medical Center, serving an area of more than 90,000 veteran patients in East Central Florida, is one of seven members of the VISN 8 Healthcare System. The Orlando VA Medical Center includes the Orlando VA Medical Center, the Community Living Center, the Residential Rehabilitation Program, the Viera Outpatient Clinic, the Daytona Outpatient Clinic, and four Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in Clermont, Kissimmee, Leesburg, and Orange City. The East Central Florida veteran population is slated for a new hospital in 2014. This much needed facility will make it easier for east central Florida veterans to access VA’s world-class medical center and relieve the burden of traveling long distances for their inpatient care.
