This branch of medicine is more lifestyle-friendly compared to a more demanding private practice. This is due to working at a larger academic center where other residents and fellows will be able to take call, take care of patients a medical professional may have at the time. Within the specialty of academic medicine, there is the opportunity to do research and studies, or teach others. A majority of those choosing to specialize in academic medicine will end up at another university after graduation.
