Mar 12, 2018: WINNER OF PRACTICEMATCH READERS' CHOICE AWARD STRIVES TO HELP PROVIDE HEALTHCARE ACCESS TO MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED

Applications Open for 2nd Annual Empowered Physician Scholarship

St. Louis, MO, March 12, 2018- PracticeMatch, a company that provides healthcare employers with a physician database and related recruiting resources, announces the winner of their Empowered Physician Readers' Choice essay contest. The Readers' Choice contestants are future physicians who were runners-up for the PracticeMatch Empowered Physician Scholarship, for which they wrote an essay regarding their goals for their physician career, and how they plan to make an impact as a physician.

Crystal Taylor, MPH, of Florida won the Readers' Choice award and a $100 Amazon Gift Card with her Empowered Physician essay, outlining the inspiration and goals for her physician career. Her essay, which touches on family ties to medicine, and cites her experience growing up in a medically underserved area, obtained the most online votes among the Readers' Choice essay finalists.

"Growing up in an underserved area, I have witnessed the barriers that many face when trying to access care. As a physician, I plan to work in an academic hospital [to teach and learn more about] the disparities that exist in local communities to help foster an environment of tolerance and cultural competency [to better] understand the obstacles that patients face...," Crystal Taylor explained in her winning essay.

Ms. Taylor earned a Master of Public Health degree from University of Miami Leonard School of Medicine in 2016, and is currently working towards her medical degree (M.D.) at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pennsylvania, where she also serves in a variety of volunteer, leadership, and mentoring roles, in addition to her professional aspirations.

"Based on her winning essay and impressive CV including many awards, honors, and scholarships, Ms. Taylor appears to be on her way to a very bright future in medicine. All of us at PracticeMatch wish her the best in her medical career, and we appreciate her participation in our Empowered Physician Scholarship and Readers' Choice essay contest. Congratulations to Crystal on winning the PracticeMatch Readers' Choice award," states Mike York, CEO of PracticeMatch.

In addition to Ms. Taylor, other scholarship finalists and Readers’ Choice contestants were Hassanatu Blake and Mackinzie McDaniel. The winner of the $2,000 PracticeMatch Empowered Physician Scholarship, awarded in January, was Oliver Sroka.

Applications have reopened for the 2nd annual (2018) PracticeMatch Empowered Physician Scholarship. Future physicians interested in applying for the $2,000 scholarship may submit their essays via the scholarship page on the PracticeMatch website through December 3, 2018. A winner will be announced on January 4, 2019 on the PracticeMatch website, and the winner’s essay will be published there as well.
