Top 8 Specialties to Practice in NYC

Internal Medicine
While practicing Internal Medicine, you can expect to consult with patients to understand their symptoms, prescribe or administer medication(s). You will also prescribe specific medical care and explain procedures and test results or prescribed treatments with patients. You will need to complete an internship specializing in internal medicine and complete the Internal Medicine Certification Examination.

Family Medicine
In a Family Medicine specialty, you will provide medical care to all members of a family regardless of age or sex. You will treat, evaluate, and assist in prevention of diseases, illnesses, and injuries. This can be done by requesting, performing, and interpreting clinical and diagnostic tests. You are also responsible for advising on needed healthcare and monitoring patient records and progress. You will also monitor the progress of your patient and their response to treatment.

General Surgery
If you choose the route of General Surgery, you will perform operations to treat or prevent disease, repair damage caused by injuries, and improve bodily function through the use of different surgical instruments. A General Surgery Physician Assistant has similar job duties – they perform tasks such as inserting tubes, handing tools to surgeons, cleaning up the operation area and more. Outside of surgery, they prepare patients for operations and monitor them afterward.

Pediatrics
Pediatricians provide general medical care, monitor growth and development, and track and administer immunizations for infants, children, adolescents and young adults. They are responsible for prescribing medications and medical treatment for illnesses, medical conditions, and injuries.

Psychiatry
A Psychiatrist is responsible for evaluating and diagnosing patients’ conditions based on symptoms, medical history, and other relevant factors. After a diagnosis is reached, they administer the proper treatment. They also counsel patients on diet, hygiene, and preventive healthcare.

Neurology
A Neurologist specializes in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. They act quickly to treat diseases related to these organs. Anatomic and Clinical Pathology
While working in Anatomic Pathology, you will examine samples from organs and other tissues commonly acquired through surgery. You can also expect to investigate the effects of disease on the human body via autopsy and microscopic examination of tissues, cells, and other specimens. A Clinical Pathologist tests bodily fluids such as urine, blood, and saliva.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
As a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialist, you will work with patients whose conditions require rehabilitation or physical therapy. Their job includes examining patients to assess movements, strength, communication abilities, and thinking. They create patient treatment plans and manage their care.
