The Pediatric Center was started in 1958 when a popular local pediatrician, Edmund N. Ervin M.D., was able to secure a grant from the federal government to support the care of children with developmental disabilities. Since that time, our Center has grown to a staff of 40, including child psychiatry, developmental pediatrics, child psychology, social work, and physical, occupational and speech therapy. We are well recognized as a statewide leader in comprehensive, interdisciplinary assessments and therapeutic interventions. In addition to developmental assessments, we provide comprehensive assessments of the medical and behavioral needs of children entering temporary state protective custody.
Located in Augusta, Maine’s state capital, our professional staff is very involved in programs that help to develop medical and mental health policy. We have close working relationships with many academic institutions and teach undergraduate and graduate students from Colby College, the University of New England and the University of Maine as well as, host family medicine residents from the Maine–Dartmouth Family Medicine Institute. We have an annual summer Child Development and Behavior Conference held at Colby College.
