The physician assistant practices medicine under the supervision of a physician. They will provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive health care services, as delegated by a physician. Working as members of the health care team, they take medical histories, examine and treat patients, order and interpret laboratory tests and x-rays and make diagnoses. They may also treat minor injuries, by suturing, splinting and casting. They will record progress notes, instruct and counsel patients, order and carry out therapies and update charts. May, if eligible, prescribe some medications. When working in a surgical arena, may provide preoperative and postoperative care and possibly work as first or second assistants during major surgeries. Must have completed an accredited, formal education program.

One to two years of Physician Assistant experience.

Must have passed a National exam such as the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination, administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and be currently licensed by the state. |
